Helldesk hell
As some of you may know, I head up the IT services department for a firm of ambulance chas^H^H^H solicitors in Sheffield; part of my job (sadly) involves dealing with the mundane idiocy of the overeducated solicitors & mentally unstable secretaries who work here. I figured I may as well share some of these gems; feel free to chip in with your own examples of education in, common sense out.
First from yesterday -
First from yesterday -
Accounts Team :Accounts : Our new colour laser is printing out our spreadsheets and labels in yellow, we don't want them in yellow, they've never been in yellow before.
IT : You have a new colour laser and a spreadsheet with colour sections; why are you surprised it's printing in colour ?
Accounts : It never printer in colour before?!
IT : You never had a colour laser before.
Nothing to see here...

Accounts Team :The copier company said we'd get this colour laser for free and that when we needed new toner we just phoned them up and they'd send it us for nothing. There was no rental charge or anything, so why are they charging us pence per copy ?
Perhaps, because there's no rental charge...

Mainly yes, but the blokes are no better.
Someone else :Q: My telephone doesn't work this morning.
A: It's unplugged, in fact, there appear to be a pair of hair straighteners plugged in instead.

Its not about women, it's about stupidity and thoughtlessness; women are just as good as us blokes in that respect.

Without generalising all well educated people, a girlfriend of mine was some Grammar school when I went to a normal comprehensive, absolutely NO common sense what so ever. I reckon it must be because all that knowledge goes in, and something has to go to make room.
Always first to go, common sense. Thats a pretty good excuse not to do any more qualifications from where I'm sitting

Re: Helldesk hell
It's a well known fact that education makes you more stupid. I work in IT support at a university and one of the parts of our job here is to support academics (lecturers, Drs etc) as well as the usual office monkeys and degree students (most of them can't even spell or use basic grammar by the way)
The other day one of the other guys actually had to say on the phone to one of these numpties, 'Do you want me to help you over the phone or do you want me to come and humiliate you in front of the whole lecture theatre?' when the person was trying to insist on having someone come and press the PC power button for him
I have to say though most of our problems are caused by out helpdesk (we are second line so our faults come through either a face-to-face support desk or a call centre). They are supposed to do a first line fix and if that's not possible then fill out the necessary information and pass the call to us. Usually though they attempt no fix and we get calls with no info, which are quite often a single sentance with no spelling/grammar/punctuation. The people in the call centre get paid a good 4k a year MORE than I do as well, and they do SOD ALL
I think the knowledge pushes the common sense out or something, but then that doesn't explain our Helpdesk. I guess they were just stupid/lazy to start with

Same set up where I work, for a county council god theres some idiots there!! went out on a staff night out and sat talking to one of the blokes for ages about it, he started on first line, went to second line and now works on special projects. Had some pretty funny stories about people phoning up with silly things, and and some about operators losing patience with them and ending up sacked!

Re: Helldesk hell
Just taken a call to the AV batphone I'm stuck on this afternoon.
The PC was blue screening whenever this lady tried to play a DVD in it, so I advised her to use the separate DVD player in the lectern for the moment.
Puts DVD in.... 'Ok it's in and I've pressed the DVD input button and it's showing up'..... 'Oh but how to I make it play now? The mouse doesn't seem to be working anymore!! I can't see the mouse on the screen!'
*me grinds teeth* 'Well the mouse is for the computer, you're now using the DVD player, so you'll have to press the 'play' button'
'IT'S WORKING NOW BUT IT'S TOO LOUD, HOW DO I MAKE IT GO DOWN!!!!!'
*more grinding teeth* 'YOU'LL JUST NEED TO PRESS THE VOLUME DOWN BUTTON NEXT TO THE PLAY BUTTON!'
standard of academics = poop.

The blue screening issue in this case probably means the PC needs some updated drivers, but the phoneline is for people who are literally trying to teach a class there and then so I just advise workarounds in situations like that and fix the actual problem later
Rainbow interiors are the slightly more desireable ones off the 16vs and the '90 spec' 8vs, I've got a rainbow interior in mine as it's a 90 spec!
They aren't easy to find in good condition for a decent price so if it is rainbow I'd say definately try and keep it nice!! I had to pay quite a bit to replace the drivers seat that had a big hole on the bolster, boo!

An interior has come up, for £75 posted but not sure what trim the cloth is, or what condition it is. He said theres some damage to the drivers side bolster so that disheartening. Oh well, we'll see when pics arrive!
If its rainbow I reckon have it regardless for £75, and sit on it for a while until you can get it repaired cheap
