Help 2.0 Zetec strange cold misfire

Postby paulbaker on Fri Apr 16, 2004 1:07 pm

Got an odd misfire on my 2.0 Zetec. When cold engine feels like it's like on 3 cylinders and runs generally horrid. As soon as warms up all is fine-doesn't even have to get to full normal temp 1/4 of the way on the temo gauge is fine.

I have replaced the Main temp sensor but not the ATS. Anyone got any bright ideas, could the ATS have such an effect on the fuelling/timimg--personally I think not.

I have asked Mr Ford who is unwiling to help cos
a) Its a 2.0 in what was an Si
b) It's a kit car anyway so it aint a Ford

Sticky valve possibly? What year is the head casting? (92 or 95 stamp on front under exhaust manifold usually).

wrong grade oil, don`t get sticky valves on 2 litre normally, well never had one. if the engine temp sensor goes down always reads as cold so wouldnt give cold start probs. does it try to idle high??

No idling is fine, BTW starting is also fine always fires and runs immediately and idles smoothly. The misfire is as you are driving with engine under load and as I said disappears as soon as near normal temp is reached.

I have had one thought--I have conected the MAF sensor to inlet pipe with 2 lengths of diff dia industrial hose (Only way I could get from 70dia at Maf to 60 dia at the inlet) stufed inside each other and hose clipped together. May be a really stupid thought but could there be an air leak that goes away as the hoses warm up.

Another thought I had was could a faulty coil pack cause this tyoe of problem.

The quest continues

yup could be coil pack breaking down, leads breaking down, poor contact between plug and leads, or could be something odd like ecu dodgy-split solder causing poor contact when cold..
