Its depends on how much you have to spend--as fiesta boy said-get an air filter, exhaust (including manifold if funds allow)--then its into things like high lift cam ,polished/ported head and twin 40's,lighten/balance your bottom end etc etc(starts to get very expensive though)-or go the easy route NOS which SHOULD be fine as long as you use it spareingly and use low BHP jets (25 or so).
Hope this helps

get the K&N for an xr2 mk2 - and also get a full system for an xr2i (manifault back) and get an xr2i manifault from a scrap yard. This will then fit and provide less restrictions.
Also you can use any xr2 tuning items such as cam etc on your car as the 1.6s uses the same engine as the xr2 mk2!
Also - try to get a carb from an early mk2 they were better in a few ways!!

rs-125, im just not a fan of NOS, think it will lower the reliaility of the car, which im not too fond on.

Standard n/a CVH crank has difficulty coping with more than 120bhp-ish - FRST and ERSTs use a fillet rolled crank to reduce flex. NOS wll shag the engine very quickly. A Zetec bottom end should do the job though I would guess

Crank no good for 120hp? What that about? I run 140hp on a std 1.6 cvh bottom end with 135lb/ft torque for over a year of constant thrashing. Ain't even got round to camming and stage 5 big valve gas flow yet!

Stage 5 huh? Can you pull trains with that kind of spec then
I said it has diffculty mate - it can flex and generally misbehave. I'd like to see if your bottom end lasts as long as most FRST bottom ends have running comparable power levels. If yours lasts 11 years I'll eat my hat, my grannies hat and my shoes too
