Help on Which Brake kit

Postby nigel s on Fri Sep 26, 2008 8:05 pm

I am going to treat my FRST to a brake upgrade but was looking for advice on what to buy. I have been looking at either the Wilwood 4 pot setup or the Hi-Spec 4 pot both to fit under 15" rims. The Hi-Spec @ £649 comes with callipers, pads disks, bells & hoses where the Wilwood does not come with hoses or pads but @ £460. I already have goodridge hoses to fit. Does anyone have any experience of these two systems or perhaps a difference in braking performance or any problems with the kits them selves that would help my make my decision. I was think who has been making brakes the longest but from my memory both companies have been in the business for a fair few number of years.

nigel,

Im having the same problem as you, im not sure what kit to use. But in saying that i have a friend who uses the Willwood stuff on his mk2 Escort and it works perfectly and has never let him down. Im sure you will get good and bad reports about both, but thats what you find with everything.

ive got wilwoods, go for wilwood pads though! aftermarket ones tend to rattle in the calipers. Also cant remember off the top of my head but some wilwoods dont have secondary dust seals, i think the hi spec does have them. Double check as if your running the car every day you need to consider the amount of road grime that gets on them in winter.

Thanks for the replys but do you now what pads work best. If sticking with Willwood pads Burton list a Fast Road, Rally & race. Priced at £45, £80.95 & £77.95.

I have used both in my Xr2i and have to say there is not a lot between them.

As said before the Willwoods do suffer from more pad rattle and do not have the dust seals. The set-up I used also had very little wheel clearance and required spacers.

The Hi-Spec ones I feel do not stop quite as well, but I am running different discs. I am also have problems with brake squeal which has been put down to the pads having to much copper in the mix! This may also be the stopping problem.

I have a friend running ceramic pads with the same Hi-Spec set up as me and even when racing cannot keep them hot enough. :o

Almost ready to place my order this week, spoke to the guys at Burton about upgrading the plain discs for grooved versions. The impression I got yes I could for about £60 but this would not be an Wilwood disc but did not say what discs they would be swapping them for.
