Richardson :What if you got a K&N replacement filter and put that on it instead of the fram filter?
Was gonna look into this but the K&N ones are pretty expensive might pop into halfords and have a look though, chances are if they're made of a similar papery material then they wont be much good either, hopefully they're made from better material though.

FxN :richardson, do this, get some kind of smoothwalled piping thats 120mm in diameter instead of that stuff you have on and then in the pipe install couple highflow computer fans like Delta 120mm fans that spin 4000rpm and push 190Cubic feet of air per minute, install couple of them in the pipe and they connect straight to your car battery. Then tell me if it makes difference in performance or not, been wanting to do this for ages. Homemade cheap mini turbo!! =O)
done this little trick on mates 1.4 golf just out of curiosity, but insted of using 120mm fans we used the 80mm fans cuz i had a few spare (too loud for pc use). the delta 80mm fans i got rate at i think 68cfpm if i remember correctly. we hooked them directly up to the battery but with a switch, a cheapo one from maplins, looks deal good in the car. fans are a bit on the noisey side so when u flick them on its a mad sound effect. we used 1 fan first and found that it actually does make a little difference but im not sure if we need more air flow than 68cfpm for the engine. under closed throttle u could hear the fan struggling after a few seconds probably cuz its pressurised the tube and the back pressure is slowing down the fan. using 2 fans made a bigger difference probably cuz more pressure was available with the fans running inline.
the car's difference was noticable with this cheapo method of forced induction. as soon as u open up the throttle the car responded much faster. the engine response increases a lot, i noticed abit more torque especially at low revs from 1200-3000. at the high end i did not notice any real difference but it sure felt the car was able to pull its weight a bit better. i will give this a go probably on me Si just as an experiment to see what difference it makes on that car. but like you said it would be better to use 120mm fans as will be able to get much more air flow in.
one word of warning though, i first used a cheapo akasa fan sleave bearing and it died on us. turs out that we completly forgot that with the engine on its more than 12v thats pumping into the fan. the delta handled it easy probably cuz its built like a tank, its 38mm thick compared to the akasa that is 25mm thick.
this could be a very cheapo method of a very low pressure supercharger effect.
watch the n00bs now flood this thread wanting a delta fan super charger and low compression pistions to match
