How to get the best from my sound system (spl)

Postby lucasdemoley on Sat Jun 02, 2007 7:08 pm

Right I'm going to an spl thing tomoz. I have two 15" alpine subs in the standard boxes (seperate) and these are 500wrms each. Im powering them from a directed 1100.d amp and have a deep cycle battery.

I used to have my subs in the boot facing away from each other facing either side of the boot. This sounded really loud. i have now changed how the subs are so they are both pointing straight into the car with the seats down.

The thing is, with the new way i have the subs with the seats down they dont sound as loud and i can hear them kinda bottoming out at a level below what they would usualy reach.

sujestions ect welcome. I dont know if i should keep them as they are now, or put them back to how they were? Is there some sort of effect from having them in the boot that made them louder than i have it now? cheers peeeps

Just because I keep talking about definetly doing it doesn't mean I'm actualy going to do it.

i woudl say put them back as they were...if u want to run tem as they are facing in the car...they ideally need to be borded up so the air movement from the front of the speaker does not travel behind it - i.e wall the car!

have u tried firing upwards yet?

Ah ok. Is it just some weir effect then? Am i best running it without the parcel shelf? I'll give it a try with the subs facing up.

Should i put on my capacitor or leave it off?

also, have you competed in spl events, are they just one frequency used or like a tone or how is it done?

cheers

my system is tuned for streetbass so not interested in SPL figures in all honesty...

but generally yes...in PROPER SPL competitions, it is just mono-tone bass tones played...resonant frequency of the car or tuning frequency of box etc are generally prefered

i would say leave the cap off...not needed IMO...give it a try once on and once off...

Parcel shelf - you will always play louder without one lol IMO, run it how you would run it in the street

Ah ok cheers dude.

Whats 'streetbass', is that more it can play louder across a higher frequency than that used for spl, as apposed to super- loud for one tone?

Also, will it play just as loud with the speakers facing into the box i.e with the frame pointing out of the box?

street bass is just a system tuned to play music and not just one note wonders...

i aint really a fan of inverting speakers to be honest...have tried it and IMO i reckon it sounds a bit quieter...but also beware that you may have to invert the wiring for the sub also to counter act them firing into the box

cheers dude.

I hit 137.1db and came 4th at the event. But one of the voice coils I think has gone on the sub as the resistance is really low on the sub, basicly one sub bangs as its hitting its x-max thing, i'm annoyed as this happened before the testing, and 3rd place was only 0.6db louder than mine and he got some decent speakers as a prize, which i should have got if my sub hadnt doen that!

Out of interest, is a voice coil has gone, can i power the sub on one coil? I.e i assume as its 500rms each coil takes 250rms, can i just give the sub 250rms and it will still work fine?

Well after abit of testing and changing boxes ect (I also played it a little thorugh each coild of the sub seperatly to check it was working, should have read here first!) and the box had a small air leak, so basicly it was pushing the air out but then i guess due to the way the holes were made from screws it wasnt letting the air back in as well, hence the sub kinda sinking and bottomoing out.

Mic was positioned on the windscreen infront of the drivers seat.

Cheers dude for the help/info with things!
