how to make a mould??

Postby curly on Tue Jul 14, 2009 3:44 pm

basicly, ive got an mcr front and rear splitter, and because they are hard toget hold of, i was thinking of making reproductions, so that if i did break one i can go in the garage and get another,

what im trying to do is make somekindof mould, that will uniform the shape, of said parts, of which i can layer up, and set new peices,

so like,

cover front splitter in cling film, papier mashaie over te splitter, to make a form, then f/g the inner shape and filler it, to make a reproduction,

but i dont hink papier mashai would work, would it??

and will fibre glass sheets stick to cling film?

once ive worked this out, i can then fit reproduction splitters to both cars, knowing i can make more if needed

well once ive got te perfect mould making way,

suply on demand :D

just wana make sure i cann actualy cling film the shape, cos the clingfilm will stop the papier machaei from sticking to the origional splitters, and hopefully will stop the f/g from sticking to the clingfilm,

if it does happy days!!!

unless anyones got any better ideas of making a mould? i would greatly appreciate it :D

not come across that yet lol, still going finding some n 13 pva, im sure itll be the same as nrml pva

still contenlating using normal papier machaie to cover the splitter, then filling the paper mould with body filler, thn ive got a hard mould then, and then, f/g over it that way

just hada go at the pappier mashae using a mondeo spoiler,

few atempts at the clingfilm, as i couldnt get the creases out

got stressed, had a fag

then went and got a wet sponge and dowsed the spoiler then applied cling fim :D no creases and clingfilm stuck to it well, so wrapped it up nicely and got at it with pva and paper,

have now filled the hole spoiler top side with pappier mashae and now waiting for it to dry in the sun,

fingers crossed its nice and strong, and doesnt break when i take it apart,

right got on to a mate about making the mould, he sprays cranes for a living, and thewarehouse next to him, make things out of fibre glass, so wil be going visiting them tomorrow, or when i can to see if they can make the moulds for me, i can do the other work,

just hoe the moulds wontt be too expensive :)

moggy,

ill telll you my secret, i was guna fit tis, with a twin exit, get rid f toeing eye, amd make a symetrical zaust exit, i got a few exhausts (4 in total 2 and 2) so can twin exit both cars, and was guna get rid of te middle partition, and smoothe it in, to the bumper as one pc,

that along with the front splitter, will make the car look alot lower,

hi there i used to work for a body kit maker a few years ago its pretty easy to make a mould.
basic way you first need to go with all the wet and dry sand papers up tp 1500 grit, then deside where you want to split the mould.you the mask off where you need to attach the lip or flang. you filler or glue gun a stich only on the masking tape, a lip around 2 in wide all the way round. so you should have the splitter with a lip all round it (use a fibre glass sheet cut up to right shap or close best way to make sheet is on a flat sheet of stainless or a mirror.)
use plasterscene to fill any gaps.
no if you have done it corret you should have half the splitter which should be all smooth and a nice lip all round , you know need to use wax release . wax the splitter and lip and buff of do this about 6-10 times .
it should be looking good now!
now you need some gell mix it up and gell splitter and lips. leave to go of over night.
next day you need to use so fibre glass tissue on the edge where the splitter and the lip meats and roll to make sure there are no air bubbles.
leave to go hard.
then do just one layer of firbre glass matting 2 oz roll and leave to go hard.
do this so its about 8 oz thick.
next day crack off just the lip and you will be left with a new thick fibre glass lip which you have just made.
now do exactly what you did before from the waxing part,
you will end up with the splitter completely covered before you split the mould in to two drill around the lip piece put holes every 3-5 inches.
now use a screw driver and prize the two parts apart.
they should just fall of if you waxed it right. blunt screw driver and a hammer. :-?
once you have removed both parts you have your mould, now makesure it all good and it hasnt stuck up if it has chip of the best you can then wet and dry to perfect finish.
wax the mould 6 times and use grey gell coat cover only the splitter area with gell not lips leave to go off and next day use only one layers of 2 oz matting do both parts and then you need some joining compound once the glass is hard. put the compound round the edge on both parts and lots where you drill to connect to the car sit the two mould pieces together and put nut and bolt where you drill the holes before to macth the parts up striaght leave to dry, crack the splitter out use a grinder to off any extra compound and use a sanding disc around the whole join line if you need to use some normal car body filler on any small hole rub down and primer grey.
that a ruff guide you need grp tissue, grp matting, mould release wax, gell coat, and loads of resin.
i hope this helps it is pretty easy but may cost around £100 for all the products but if you sell them once made you will make yor money with in a few. any questions just ask pm me :D
be aware of copy right if it has a copy right you may need to alter it slightly even just 5mm of filler each side is ok as it is not an exact copy :bonkers: :D

thankyou for the guide m8,

i will be getting on to the case this year, and will start producing front and rears for people who need them,

i dont give a toss if there copy rited as im only duplicating for future use,and doing some experimenting and not selling them to make a profit  just to help a fellow enthusiast out :D

i will keep people informed as and when i can get funds, get materials, and get in the mood to get very sticky :)
