I am reminded of the time I raced...
...Reginald Entwhistle (76) in his 1973 Austin Maxi Vaden Plas Auto.
As I pulled up to the lights I looked to my right and saw Reg, aggressively revving his engine. I knew he was up for a race. The classic Jazz pumping out of his ICE seemed only to further his anticipation. I flicked my FRST into high boost and tightened up my Seatbelts. Reg adjusted his Klunk Klip and pulled the choke out a notch. I could see his eyes behind those horn rimmed spectacles, glowing fiery red with adrenaline...
Reg got a good start from the lights, his 13" steels and 165 tyres gripped surprisingly well, I fluffed 2nd to third and hit the rev limiter, loseing valuable time, in which Reg shifted his 4 speed box into third, looked in his chrome wing mirrors and dialled in Radio 2 as he sped off into the distance.
Determined not to be another notch on his dashboard I planted it and as my 18"s tore up the tarmac I could see Reg in the distance, approaching a series of twisty bends...
With remarkable heel and toe, he shifted the Maxi with exquisite precision through the first hairpin, handbrake on as the rear glided around before catching it with a little opposite lock, cadence braking to shift weight to the front without skidding into the next bend.
On his tail, I followed the same line and entered the hairpin, skidding slightly before correcting and loosing vital speed. Reg was getting further and further away, I could barely hear the tappety rattle of his 'A' series 1.3 litre as the beige monster shot up the road.
As I exited the bends I could see Reg sat on the bumper of a WRX, flashing him to move over. He appeared to be shifting around on the vinyl trim trying to see past the Subaru. Eventually the Scooby moved over as Reg dropped the Maxi's auto box in to third, stepped on the gas and annihilated the Oriental supercar.
By the time I'd caught up with the Subaru, Reg was long gone...
A most embarrassing experience...

actually that would b quite a laugh, putting a supercharged V8 out of a jag or summin into a stock-looking maxi, then watching the look on ppl's faces as you disappear into the twilight!

I used to have an austin maxi, very reliable cars they were.
Believe it or not they share the same doors and the austin "landcrap" which i also used to own.
Good qulaity B series engine in, the 5 bearing crank one.
