Follow these guidelines if you want cheap insurance.

1) Find someone with Full NCB, preferably someone who trusts u, maybe mum or dad.

2) Register the car in their name, as they will be the main policy holders, u will be a named driver

3) Phrases such as garaged or drive tends to help. Of course so does a cat 1 alarm/immobiliser system.

4) Use the car with the smallest insurance group within the family to insure with no bonus. Make sure that you are not on that policy.

5) If u ever get stopped, you do not own the vehicle, and you only use it sometimes with permision. You are a named driver.

6) I am 24 with an rs turbo and am insured in a high risk area of london near Brixton. £449.00 fully comprehensive, and I have only held a liscense (officially) for about 3 yrs.
My insurance will not start going down until I am 25. But its far better than the s*** your paying.

7) Do not call yourself, get your dad to do it or a man in his 40's, otherwise they will laugh u off the phone. I fortunately have the gift of the gab, and can turn on that interllectual maturity when needed, of course i have a few years experience.

Goodluck!

Andrew
You are right on that one. I got a couple of cheaper quotes on my RS but didnt like the sound of the companies.
The cheapest quote isnt always the best one. Some of them are right bast@rds when it comes to claiming & although everyone thinks 'oh i wont crash' it may happen to you.
Then when you get your insurance £50 cheaper with a company that has all of 2 people working for them rather than a well known one you find they now become not so helpful.

Ive just checked out Elephant.co.uk and they are £120 cheaper then quoteline. Has anyone insured through elephant. What are they like, would it be worth insuring through them.

yeah, I'm with elephant. Really helpful and they even call you back to save on your phone bill! Saying that though everything you'd need to do can be done with email pretty quickly. Never made a claim with them, but as they're owned by admiral I'd imagine there shouldn't be a problem

Ok first of all you should be able to take the rover if it is standard, although keep in mind that it is a Honda built engine.
Ive got an RS1800 with the same mods as yourself and i humped an ashtray GTE last night in a straight line, twice.
Should have stayed with the old quick ratio RS18 gear box.
But the Vectra..................u sure it was a V6 GSI

I'm with Shug - are you sure it was a V6 GSI and not an SRI as they look very similar !!!

Even with all the mods I've got on my 1800 - I'd have problems with a V6, well up to 50mph anyway - after that I'd leave him well behind

If you managed to get an extra 20bhp with just an exhaust, de-cat and air filter you're doing amazingly well - go for the Kent Cam R Kit which will give you an extra 22Bhp - that'd see you disapear into the horizon.

How do you afford the insurance @ 17 ??

Personally i think that your just talking crap, i have an Rs1800, im 20 have 2 years no claims and the best i could get is £1100 tpft. And thats after i had foned Herts, and Adrian Flux.
Unless you have a traders policy, but that would still cost you well over a grand.

I know how frustrating Rovers are my mates got a 214sei and he used 2 rip utter hell out of my 1.4 ashtray so i bought a brand new 1.6 engine got a KN57i, exhaust ect and guess what? he still rips me, nothing to do with the fact that he 8 valves more than me or has multi point fuel injection rather than my single point! So a rolling road showed me im sitting at 60bhp at the flywheel and 50bhp at the wheels (somthing not right there)
Compared to the standard rovers 95bhp, i found out I have to change the ECU and wiring loom but im not going 2 bother im sick of the bloody thing.
My hearts set on an XR2I or a RS1800i [ERRR] insurance is not that different as the ashtray has had an engine transplant and iv now got a years NCB at 19 do u think £1500 is exceptable 4 a RS1800?

i am now 20 with an rs1800, i got insurance for £1300 with No NCB and this insurance is unconditional. the second quote was £1100 but limited to 7500miles a year, but if you do over that you just pay another 10% so that worked out best. and i valued my rs1800 at £7-8 grand, (sound system, coilovers, 16", magnex zorst, 57I etc etc). but i have had a tracker fitted (20% off with that) and i have an approved alarm.
