ICE: Buying and fitting a small amp?
Hi,
I've got a Mk3 Fiesta with a couple of 6x9's in the boot running off a Sony HU.
I was looking to add just a little more volume to it, and wanted a cheapo amp that i could rig up for the rear speakers.
So - what sort of amp shall i look for? I was thinking of getting a second hand one off ebay, but what should i be looking for when buying?
Also how do I go about hooking the thing up?
I searched on the forums but haven't found a guide, i'm guessing it's fairly easy??
Thanks

What do you expect, you posted in the WRONG forum and your asking a chavtastic question.
Get rid of the 6x9, there a waste of money.
The best set-up is usually a set of decent comps for the front, and a sub.

Re: ICE: Buying and fitting a small amp?
i don't get how asking about wiring up 6x9's to an amp is "chavtastic" as you so eloquently put it?!?!
how is your sub wired in?!?! or is the fact you don't have 6x9s and just BASS makes you not "chavtastic"
i've only been on here a few months and some answers people give to genuine questions are rude and sometimes arrogant!!
anyway, check the 6x9's mate for the power output. get a amp that can handle that output so if the speakers are 120 watts get like a 300watt amp or sililar.
you'll need to get a wiring kit, running a power cable from the battery to the boot (or wherever you will have the amp), you will also need to run a remote wire from the back of the headunit to the amp and some RCA cables as well.
once all thats done, you need to earth the amp somewhere, connect the speakers and then fiddle with the gains to make sure the sound is how you want.
but yea, Fiend is right, this is the wrong forum
hope that helps.

Re: ICE: Buying and fitting a small amp?
Hi Swiss,
Thanks for your post!
6x9's are cheap, provide a bit more sound and don't take up your boot space! I don't want a sub.
Re - wiring kit/cables etc...is there no guide anywhere for showing me ho to do this? As i imagine there will be cable running everywhere, which will involve lifting carpet etc. As well as drilling to fix the amp.
Any other tips appreciated.
Also - I am not a chive. For a start I have come on here and written in text language!

Re: ICE: Buying and fitting a small amp?
there might be somewhere!! but finding it is another story.
you'll probably have to pull your carpet up otherwise you'll have wires running everwhere!! theres usually some hole in the bulkhead that you can run the power wire through. They are usually covered with rubber gromits to stop crap gettin in. then its just a case of running the wires under the carpet to the boot. as for fixing the amp use sticky velcro or something and just stick it to the carpet if you don't wanna drill holes in the back of your seats.

Re: ICE: Buying and fitting a small amp?
I can safely say since installing 6x9s into my car the sound has significantly improved.
Can I ask in what way you consider 6x9's to be a waste of money? As for the chive-tastic comment, 6x9's are only "chavtastic" if you buy them for £15 quid and they distort (you seem to forget that some production jap cars of the 80's and 90's came with 6x9's in the parcel shelf from the factory!). With a stealth shelf theres nothing wrong at all, with a decent pair of speakers the sound quality is fantastic, so drop the attitude, they guy only wants some help.
Unlike many people here I do usually have backseat passengers and until I source a decent set of 13cm speakers for either side of the parcel shelf, backseat passengers need a bit more sound than just the sub going off. You also seem to forget that in the ford fiesta the speakers in the doors face into the footwells and this is inadequate for rear seat passengers.
Amps will generally give you a bit more volume and due to them running from a low-level line you will get less distortion at high volumes. They are easy to wire up, RCA and remote cable from the back of the head unit, through the car under the trim to the boot, a live cable from the battery down the opposite side of the car than the RCA cables, and an earth to one of the earth points in the boot. When you switch your HU on, the remote wire is live, switching the amp on. You should be able to configure what the RCA's are used for on the HU (Some are set to Sub outputs rather than rear outputs).
Hope that helps a little, though just to let you know, next time post the question in the "Modifications -> ICE, Security and Insurance" subforum.

Re: ICE: Buying and fitting a small amp?
with the amp get the largest power you can with the best brand.
always leaves room for upgrading then and some headroom.
jbl are a decent enough budget brand, depends what you wanna spend.
wiring wise you will probally just need an 8 guage kit but if you put a bigger one in again it leaves room for upgrading. power cable with inline fuse from batt to amp, ground from amp to chasis, speaker cable to 6x9s, remote to hu ohh yeah and rcsa. simple,
post above is better!

Re: ICE: Buying and fitting a small amp?
Where to start..
They drag the sound stage to the back of the car, as they will be louder than the front speakers.
6x9s are aimed at the mass market and are designed to just be 'loud' straight from the headunit, without the use of an amp, sacrificing sound quality to acheive this. T
The fact everyone installs them on their flimsy parcel shelf adds to the decrease in sound quality.
A properly amped good quality component system will get as loud and sound better than any 6x9s on the current market.
They can work well if installed correctly though.

Re: ICE: Buying and fitting a small amp?
To be honest I can agree with most of the points there mate, but that is for the people who just plug and play and don't tweak the settings. The fader is there to seperate the sound and balance it out, and with a decent HU and amp they don't sound as bad as you're making out.

Re: ICE: Buying and fitting a small amp?
When i just had front comps and a sub in the boot, i hated it.
Soon as i put some 6x9s in sounded so much better, didn't sound like it was missing something.
There is one thing i have noticed about this site recently and starting to get on my nerves now, people are always trying to force their opinions on each other.
That original post was asking about how to do it, and wasn't asking for opinions and stupid answers that help no one.

An opinion is never forced but expresed.
As for 6x9's, I am pretty sure everybody has done it at one point.
Me, no need for music in the RS! Just sit back and enjoy

Re: ICE: Buying and fitting a small amp?
That chive stuff was wayyyy out of line !!
I have just brought a Sony HU and 6x9s, but wont be putting them on a flimsy parcel shelf. Will be a much heavier shelf to stop stupid rattling noises and increase the sound quality without using an amp. 6x9s are nothing like chavy.
I have only just started using this, and all seemed well, but I guess there are people with moronic and pig faced ignorance everywhere you go. Good people ask sensible questions on here and we should be welcoming people and helping them as much as we can, if we cant help them DO NOT POST??? The big man act has back-fired.

Re: ICE: Buying and fitting a small amp?
ok fellow this is how mine is done
the best way to wire it up is to take the live from the battery and within 6inch get a inline fuse. (dont wire the live till the last moment)
look in the engine bay where the wipers are (assuming it a mk3) there are little rubber flaps poke it in and go to the drivers side and poke it out there
lift the header tank up to reveal a rubber grommet make a small cut and push the wire through it will come above the fuse box
remove the trim on the drivers side and feed the cable to the back.
remove the headunit and run the rca down the left side so remove the relevant trim
take the remote lead usually blue and run it down with the live
now in the boot you should have rca live and remote
place amp where you want
connect live at amp end
connect rca
connect remote lead
connect earth to body and then to amp
connect live at battery end
and you are ready to go
best way to tune is to set amp to zero
tune headunit up to a few bars from max then play with the gain and stuff and avoid clipping you will know when this happens and they start to pop and fart just back it off on the gain and you should be ok
i hope this helps you
if you want pics of my set up i will send you some
as for 6x9 they just add a little something they not for chives if they are done right most cars i see are with cheap speakers subs all wired in and jacked up so they fart, and clip.
one tip buy the best you can afford and get advice from people with the stuff compare the market.
