ICE trouble

ICE trouble

Postby adamr6698 on Sun Feb 03, 2013 8:53 pm

Hi guys I'm having trouble wiring in an amp to my girlfriends golf. I know its not a ford but the basics are still the same and I'm hoping someone can offer some help/advice.

I've put a tablet (nexus 7) in her dash instead of a head unit. coming from the headphone-out aux in the tablet is a stereo lead splitting into 2 RCA. This goes into a 4 channel amp in channels 1&2. Speaker wires then connect the amp to the speakers. I tested it all before putting the hundreds of bits of trim back, and it was working fine.

Now I've just finished putting it all back together and decided to test it once more just in case, but all I get is sound from 1 speaker. And depending on which channels the RCA plugs are in (1, 2, 3 or 4), the sound comes from different speakers.

This didn't happen when I tested it at first.

Could I have some wires bridging somewhere? Thats the only thing I can think of but I can't see any wires touching.

This has taken me all weekend and I'm well pi**ed off now.

HELP!!!!

Cheers

I've just sorted it. Although it's a bit if a bodge.

Basically, the 4 outputs from the amp to the speakers obviously each had a wire going to a speaker.

I simply put all 4 positives into one positive output, and all 4 negatives into the negative output.

But, with all 4 speakers getting the signal from the same output, I'm pretty sure it's only mono sound now.

This seems like a temporary fix to me, and I'd like to have stereo sound asap. I'll put a wiring diagram up as soon as I've drawn it.

If anyone could help I'd appreciate it :-)

Tar, Adam.

Take those additional wires out of the single channel on the amp now because you risk blowing your amp, the speakers, or the wiring - a massive risk.

So, you have a Nexus 7 - Headphone to RCA cable into the amp inputs, the amp outputs to the speakers.

How have you wired it up (Nexus to the amp, rather than amp to the speakers)

With a 3.5mm jack (nexus end) to 2xRCA lead (amp end).

Having starting issues now too, so I think I've broken something. I've found a blown fuse so I'll get one tomorrow. I've been reading up on these cars and people have had central locking issues when installing aftermarket head units and all sorts. Bloody modern cars. Everything's wired into everything else. I shouldn't have touched it in the first place.

Anyway, I'm hopefully going to bring my work's code reader home tomorrow night to see what codes its thrown up.

In the meantime, I've unplugged the amp completely to take it out of starting issue equation. Thanks for the heads up man, the only audio I've done before is putting a sub in an old corsa lol.

My girlfriend is not pleased with me lol :(

Don't do that! Your amp will be rated at 4ohms per channel. You will be running at 1ohm wired like this. Your amp is likely to catch fire

Also you will probably have to put the amp into 2-channel bridged mode using (usually) a little switch on the side :)

Got it started this morning. Just charged the battery overnight lol. What a doyle. I'm not used to it clicking when the battery's dead, I'm used to older cars trying to turn over.

Anyway, as daft as I feel, it's back on the road and she doesn't have to complain about driving my shed any longer haha.

Last time I touch a modern car!

Dunno what to do about the stereo situation still thought. Might use a single din headunit hidden (but accessible) in the dash, then connect the nexus via aux and mount it properly. I think that'll be mire stable, and have better sound quality anyway. Plus you can't put a cd in a tablet.

True, but you could always get a deezer sub and download any music you want.

EDIT : Just re-read that it's a four channel amp. Have you checked that the impedance on the speakers is appropriate for the amp ? You may have popped the power amp by using too-low impedance speakers.

Have you done basic testing, that's to say, got some music going and connected each speaker, in turn, to a single output; this proves the output of that one channel and also the wiring & speakers. Assuming no audio, move onto another output, until you get something then test each speaker in turn.

Assuming they test okay, using one speaker, connect to each output in turn, that proves each of the audio output channels.

Lastly, assuming no audio at all, have you connected the remote switch to live / ground (as appropriate) to ensure the amp is turning on :)

Assuming the amp and speakers work as expected, it's a case of switching the amp between 4 channel and stereo input modes (if possible).

All the speakers work mate but which one works depends on how the 2 RCA plugs are plugged into the amp.

I'm pretty certain I have to switch it to 2 channels.

Oh and what's a deezer sub? Just a make of sub woofer?

Good news. Head unit and aux lead for the win. I've finally convinced her it's the best idea. Quality.

Even better news, my vectra decided to part with it's clutch fluid all over the clutch last night. So I'm selling it to a lad at work, and the fiesta's coming out of retirement to save the day, along with the amp from the missus's golf.

Bout time.

Every cloud.....
