induction noise

Postby 5tur4t on Thu Oct 31, 2002 2:52 am

okay, i've heard that inducation kits make a nice sound.

can anyone explain WHY? im intreaged! and also, is there a way to replicate that noise without an induction kits, i've heard drilling holes in the air filter box works... but not sure where to drill the holes, or why it works.

anyone shed any light on this subject for me?

cheerz :D

its makes that noise because the air filter has not got a surround to it...it just simply sucks in all of the air around it...the reason the standard air box doesnt make this sound is becuase it is enclosed and the air being drawn into the engine is from the small feed pipe.

when drilling the air box...i think u have to do it on the bottom half??but aint too sure...the air still has to pass through the filter so do it before it  and yes u'll get a nice roar from doing this also...might not be as loud as the induction kit but will sound nice

I think thats the general idea.
If you are gonna drill your box you do it on the bottom, otherwise water and $hit get in!

Also get a k and N panel filter as they have a better flow rate than your standard paper one, and can be cleaned and then re used. Ths should help the engine breath better. The induction kit makes more noise as the manufactures design the statndard air box to be quiet by having a small inlet so there is less sucking noise. Induction kits though are better but they let hot air in as there is no heat shield like with an air box. Also whaen it rains etc ur sucking in water. :D

Yeah you need to drill the air box under the filter and as far away from the engine as possible. You only want cold air getting into that box. Warm air will actually decrease the performance of your car.

But to save pissing around and damaging your air box your might as well just get a KnN they are only about 60 - 70 quid tops. You can then remove the air box totally and save it incase you need it when you sell your car or something.

i was gonna give it a go because i was curious, and if i do i'll get a spare filter box from a scrappy incase all goes wrong, lol. Just wanted to see what it sounds like.

i've taken a pic of the box, and put black dots on where i thought you need to drill the holes, is that where they go or not?

If it's a carb jobbie, just take the filter out. More power, more noise :)

I did it with quite a few of my old carb cars and never had a problem. You could put some kind of mesh over the inlet so you would still get the noise but won't stop water, but let's face it what's the likelyhood of getting water into your engine, unless you drive through lakes, etc. ;)

i drive through big puddles is that enough?

i did think about the mesh idea though... having no air filter... would that fail an MOT?

scroll up and look at the pic, it's the long plastic "squarish" tube that goes out of the pic from the main part of the air box, if you take it off it makes it sound more sporty when u put ur boot down

i drilled some holes in the back of my air box,

it sounds really deep but quite throaty, is that normal?

sounds quite cool though, just don't hear it as much when rev's are high!

[ERRR] i drill more holes on the filter?, will it make it louder?!

its two peices clipped together, pull them apart at the end, and pull it up so it comes out a bit where it clips in, then just wriggle the bottom half of the pipe out and it all comes out, not the best explination in the world but hey, im tired. it does work though.
