Insurance Declarations (Touchy Subject)

Postby richard_p88 on Thu Jun 15, 2006 1:31 pm

Just as the topic says, what can i get away with when it comes to declarations of mods?

I have read alot on this forum about why it should be done and i can totally understand that argument, don't wanna be up poo creek if i've gotta claim. Problem is i've got a 1.1 and can actually insure an real Si for little more if things are declared. I Have the following option on online sites.

Alloy wheels (non standard).............................Alloy wheels (optional extra)
Blueprinting....................................................Body coloured bumpers
Bodykit (non standard)....................................Bodykit (optional extra)
Bonnet bulge/grill............................................Brakes - uprated
Bull bars.........................................................Dual controls
Engine - bored out...........................................Engine - non standard
Engine - other alterations.................................Engine - standard replacement
Engine chip 00-10% inc BHP.............................Engine chip 11-25% inc BHP
Engine chip 26%+ inc BHP................................Exhaust/manifold-non standard
Exterior decorative changes...............................Filters (non standard)
Interior changes................................................Low pressure gas
Mini Chilli Pack..................................................Mini Pepper Pack
Mini Salt Pack ...................................................Modification due to disability
Rally/spot lights.................................................Respray (different colour)
Roll cage/Roll Bars.............................................Side skirts/sills
Spoiler - rear ....................................................Spoiler/airdam - front
Supercharging....................................................Suspension lowered (5-12.5cm)
Suspension lowered (<5cm).................................Suspension other (not lowered)
Transmission changes...........................................Turbocharging
Valence - rear......................................................Wheel arches
Windows - Front Darkened > 30%
Windows - Rear Darkened > 30%
Windows - Tinted < 30%

Fitted to car is an Si interior (interior changes) K&N air filter (Filters - NonStandard) Si bumpers (body kit/optional extra /body colored bumpers).

Interior is a major problem as i think they are assuming full on race buckets etc, also not sure what category Si bumpers would fall into. I have tried a quote over the phone (trying to explain that stuff was all standard fitment on Si) and it increased from a little over £1,000 standard, to around £1,900

So what can i get away with, i know this is a controversial subject.

You have to declare everything...from clear indicator lights to engine conversions...you cannot get away with anything, since the insurance company will move heaven and earth to get out of paying...but at the end of the day its your car that wont be covered in an accident so all that money spent of mods will be wasted

Yeah that's what i'm afraid of, i'm sure there's people on here with similar changes though. I'm interested in what they have declared things as.

Just phone the insurance company up and tell them exaclty what mods you have then get them to write to you confirming exactly what mods you have made to ensure they cant catch you out :)
When I phoned up Norwich Union about my lowering springs they classed them as a 'suspension' improvement even though it was just 1 element of the suspension, so as said they will charge you for the whole unit even if only elements are changed.

HTH

Mike

EDIT: just do the quote normally online then phone them up with the quote number and say you couldnt classify your mods and ask to do it over the phone...thats what I did even though they still classified my lowering springs as 'suspension mods'

not entirely true. Say you have a crash and alloys you damaged and you did not declare them they may just turn around and say we aint paying for them etc. they mainly say anything that makes your car more attractive to theives they will then say your insurance is void. My Bro inlaw works for norwhich unioin he was explaining it to me :) it will differ with different compainies but each one has different policies ive heard of some that dont even charge extra for some exterior interior mods. All depends on your policy.

I said if they find an undeclated mod they may invalidate it...and its better to be safe than sorry.
And anyway they have a legal responsibility to pay for 3rd party not yours

yeh true but im just saying insurance compainies dont always try to get out of paying for it. They just dont want to be paying for parts you havent paid them for.

If you know some1 who works for NW then you will know that they will invalidate your insurance if they discover an undeclared mod...well thats what they told me and iv been with them for 2 years.
Name me one insurance company who wouldnt try and get out of paying a claim...they are a business and will go to almost any length to minimise expense.

Tesco finance. My sister was crashed into in the car which is now mine. It had alloys which where slighlty scratched and undeclared they just said to her we will not pay to repair the alloys but will the rest now the alloys are declared and covered. It all depends on the company :)
