Insurance on an engine swap??????

Postby fezzapower on Wed Jan 31, 2007 12:00 pm

when i come to putting my xr2i engine into my 1.1, how will the insurance work???

I've phoned Adrian Flux and they quoted me £1500 because its an engine swap. Another company quoted me £850 for a standard XR2i.

Ive been told that if i phone the DVLA and inform them that my 1.1 has basicaly been turned into an XR2i (as it will be, brakes, sus, engine, g/b, clutch etc are all being put on) that they might change the reg to that of an XR2i rather than the 1.1 thus being able to insure it as a standard XR2i rather that an engine conversion.

I have my doubts that this is correct, so is there anyone that can tell me if this is right please???

Also any of you that have engine conversions, any insurance companys that you use would be helpful.

thanks

You've been told a load of ballocks mate. If your car is an LX it will be an LX the day it is scrapped, you cannot change it.

You need to insure the car as a modified car and yes it will cost more than than insuring a 2i even if every modified part is from a 2i.
Those that can, do; and those that can't, talk about it.

you will need to change your cars cc to 1.6 not 1.1 that the lx is
if you look at your log book it says it all there from the dvla,

as for insurance just inform them that the engine capacity is now a 1.6
not a 1.1 and lol dont say its a xr2i lol all you have done is change the engine..

why wouldnt i tell them its an xr2i, it is essencialy gunna be one, its got all the bits off an xr2i and i think that looks better than them thinking its a 1.6 with 1.1 brakes etc.

seriously.. think logically.. the XR and RS badges = High insurance... If its just a 1.6 efi as fitted to normal mk5 escorts etc....

Your best bet would be fit a 2.0 from a mondeo. More power than the xr2i engine and if they ask what car the engine came from (and they will) it will havee come from a group 9 car, not 14, so should be cheaper.

Just because I keep talking about definetly doing it doesn't mean I'm actualy going to do it.

I guess the insurance company wont really look at what your making the car into i.e. effectively a standard Xr2i, but instead each individual mod so the premium us calculated on a mod by mod basis hence a higher premium.

How old are you out of interest?

IMO £1500 on an Xr2i is a waste of money as they arnt exactly 'fast' well relative to that premium that is!

engine swap

Postby garry_noble on Thu Feb 22, 2007 10:34 pm

just wondering maybe some ppl are able to help me , if i was to change the engine in my fiesta si from 1.6litre to a 2litre mondeo and it went through mot but i hadnt changed the log book how would that work and what would happen??

as ive seen alot of cars for sale that have had engine swaps say 1.1 to 1.6 ect and they say still cheap insurance as log book unchacnged.

what happens in mot about the engine change then ? ???? ?

i know it would void insurance if i had 2litre in car and didnt tell them but im wondering out of interest

thanks

im 19 mate, and i went with an xr2i rather than an frst or 2.0lt conversion because a) the xr2i fell in my lap at a realy good price(cheap lol) and b) i couldnt find any cheap rsturbo engines etc when i was looking, and i know its not gunna be realy fast cause no end of people on here said that, but it just works for me, it will be quick enough for what i want for a while, my job isnt exactly well paid and i use my car to go to work 5 days a week, so the bigger in engine size the more money goes on petrol. the xr2i will be a little bit nicer than the bigger engine and the turbos on petrol and a damn site quiker than the 1.1 that my cars currently got in it.

my mates 19 and he got a quote for around £1500 for a golf VR6, thats a 2.5 litre lol, no idea where he got that quote??

can you not just use a metal skimmer and grind away the old engine number then use a press and press your old standard engine number into the bigger engine?

im not gonna do this i just got suggested it lol

what happens in mot about the engine change then ? ???? ?

i wanna kno this too...will they not notice? or different rules apply to the different engine?
