Insurance renewal, no reply = renew
I had my insurance renewal letter through a few weeks ago and it says on there, if I DON'T want to renew with then, don't call them up or do anything and they will take that as a yes
2 things piss me off with this, firstly I have to pay to call them up and say 'no, i'm not renewing with you' and 2nd; I'm sure that I learned somewhere that companys were not allowed to take no reply as confirmation.
Can anyone who knows a bit more about contract law shed some light on this.
I've not been stung or anything, I'm just wondering if what I remember is correct.

That sounds backward, assuming I read it right!!
My insurance just automatically renews unless I otherwise say. And I know for a fact that, that is fine as far as the law is concerned, not sure if it works in reverse though.
Not much help to you but just thought I would post it anyway

I've had exactly the same from Adrian Flux this week. My insurance runs out on the 2nd so I've had a renewal quote, bartered them down a bit and I will accept it. However I've changed bank accounts since I last paid them, I still have my old account it just doesn't have any money in it. Anyway got a letter from the bank yesterday saying that I had been charged as the account didn't have enough money in it to service the direct debit.
I shall be invoicing Adrian Flux.

It was, that's the point, the bank swapped everything over on to the new account. But the issue is that I didn't pay them with DD before so how have they managed to set one up on my account?

That what I'm getting at, I'm sure I heard somewhere in one of my contract law classes that a company cannot take silence as confirmation.

Had this problem with Direct Line / Tescos - I tried to get through to no avail to tell them that I did not want to renew the policy with them. Got passed from pillar to post, they deliberately made it awkward for me to stop me cancelling the policy and prevent the renewal going through.
My advice is to do what I did:
1. Make sure you cancel the direct debit.
2. If you can't get through on the phone or get any response from them via email - write a letter with all your policy details on it and tell them that you do not want to renew the policy. Take a copy of this letter and if you have any problems you can produce the copy if needed.
I'm with More Than at the moment and I can't praise them enough, swapped number plates and cars several times in the last year and haven't been charged for doing so. Got straight through on the phone every time.

I didn't have any hassle cancelling my policy with Admiral, but I thought it was a backwards and sneaky way of renewing a policy.
I've moved to More Than too, they were a LOT cheaper and you get assigned a single person who deals with you whenever you need...a nice 22 year old girl in my case

They can't set up a DD without you completing a DD Mandate and sending it back to them. If they have done then they're breaking the law.
Are you sure it's not just a recurring card payment?
