Insuring a car from another country

Postby Leon on Thu Oct 12, 2006 12:54 am

My family live in Australia but are originally from the UK. I'm looking for a new car at the moment, but insurance prices are stupid.

My mum's offered to take an insurance policy on a car I buy in her name, and to put the car in her name and have me as a named/main driver.

Now.. would this be "illegal"?
What are the chances of getting caught?

She comes back over here from time to time and will no doubt drive the car herself, anyway.

Many thanks,

- Leon

Can't say I know, ring a few insurance companies and ask them if you can take out a policy if you don't live in Britain. If it isn't allowed though, don't do it; driving with insurance with false details is as good as driving without insurance at all.
1.8 diesel - too primitive to break!

The named person of an insurance policy is supposed to be the main driver.

Obviously that's not the case when people insure themselves on their parents policy. However, how is it proved?

If your parents live on the otherside of the globe it may be a little harder.
Those that can, do; and those that can't, talk about it.

Here's another one.. my friend's dad is thinking about putting me on his company's trader's policy - but if asked I strictly work for them..

Is that wise?

At the end of the day lieing to an insurance company is fraud, so it's not very wise. That said, if you are careful you will never get found out, unless you post what you are going to do on a publicly available forum!

Although getting onto somebody else's insurance may seem like a cheap option in the long run it is counter-productive as you will never be building up any no-claims bonus for when you finally take the plunge yourself. No matter if you have a perfect, unblemished driving record there is nothing insurance companies like better than no-claims when trying to insure a high powered car.
