Intercoolers???
I have a FRST with a T3 turbo conversion on it. The car is currently running the standard intercooler and i am thinking of upgrading it to something more substantial, what i am wanting to know is what intercooler i can fit to it, only thing is i dont want any options where i have to bin my current Pace alloy radiator. The car is totally standard bodywork wise if that has any affect on what IC can be fitted. All Info is extremely appreciated!
thanks craig

Right.
You basically have 2 options, one involves little work, the others involve modifying your front bumper
Option 1 is the easiest and that is to buy a Pace alloy intercooler. They have designed it so it fits into the front of your engine bay where the old intercooler goes. Since it is bigger however you have to move the radiator around etc. It looks a bit poor, but works better than a standard Fiesta intercooler
Here was mine before I upgraded to a cossie IC
As you can see due to space restraints it overlaps the radiator. This restricts airflow a little. The other problem is most of the IC is covered up which isnt ideal for temps.
But anyhow that's the easiest method
The next method is to get something like a Intercooler from GRS motorsport.
2 main options available.
One his large intercooler which goes at the front of the car, and the bumper is modified to fit around it like on Moondust FRST's car here
Or another example on IanFRST's
This is a great setup and gives very low temps, but for a standard T3 running less than 20psi or so it's really overkill and can look a bit out of place of the front of the car depending on colour, bumper etc.
Your next option is to copy what GavRST did to his and get a custom intercooler made up that fits directly into the front bumper like this
I personally think this is the best option as it doesnt over power the car looks wise, and gives excellent temps
Full details of that conversion is available here

And the man you need to speak too for either of these intercoolers is Graham at GRSMotorsport here

Have a word with him. He's a nice bloke and very helpful, cant recommend him enough

If you go for the pace 1, dont be a doghnut like me and get a FRST one, it has brackets that r of no use, make sure u get the Escort RST one as u have a T3.
Another option is a standard cossie intercooler, which i think is from a 2wd one, whic i would like.

Glad someone appreciated my little write up
Yeah a standard 2WD cossie intercooler can be got for about £30 as generally 2WD Cosworth owners are keen to upgrade. They are more than enough for a Fiesta/Escort Turbo.
I always want to go one better so I paid top dollar for the 4x4 Cosworth IC which is 25% bigger. Doubt it makes much difference though. The main thing to insure is you get max airflow over the IC.
Having a large intercooler doesnt help much if most of it is hidden behind your bumper.

This setup i have found is awesome, i have a large radiator from GRS which takes the entire amount of the front panel minus a small gap large enough for hoses to go through for intercooler pipes. The Radiator has retained the Standard FRST Fan which is the best one to have on the radiator
The intercooler, even though most of it looks covered up it gives excellent temps, is still remotely subtle as it doesnt "stick" out. My Zetec Turbo manages perfect with this

Out of interest Ian how did you get the FRST fan to attach to the GRS rad?
The standard rad has a screw hole and a lip along the top which the fan attaches too, but the GRS one had neither.
It didnt matter in my case since I went for a rear mounted fan, but in case I ever change my mind...

i like the look of gavRST's intercooler the best and line you say ian FRST's would probably be an overkill! Does anyone have the price that GRS charged gav for the intercooler making? Stoned another question for you when you upgraded your servo did you cut the servo rod down 25mm in the end?

Stoned :Otherwise it would have been wrong and the brakes would have been on all the time.
Craig/Paul deffo go for the lil GRS one like gavs. Need to keep the car looking as standard as possible IMO - shame about plate location though. Has to be tiny as well

Explain ??
Although the you might have a T3 in the Fiesta.. the fixing of the Intercooler is the same.. the only diff between a T2 FRST and a T3 FRST is the position of the Turbo !! and thus the radiator botom being moved forward..
but the mounting points of the top have stayed the same..
The Tubing and Hosing of the T2 are different of the T3 .. and thus you have to adjust the Turbo - > IC hose (ERST hose rebuild)
I don't see the prob.

Right i spoke to Graham. Turns out i know the guy as he has a mini cooper S and uses mini2.com forum (I also have a Mini you see) so we had a good chat about him developing a big intercooler for the cooper S. Then he gave me the neccessary info for the FRST intercoolers looks like we will be going for the smaller one like on gav's. And stoned! We got a mk5 escy servo and res and did the mods to it so thanks to you for the info we managed to do the whole conversion for just £5 good eh?
