J57 SRX - Red XR2i - My first 2013 project

Well I've had this for 8 months now, and not even looked at it!

Purchased on ebay last year, partially broken for spares - Why?

All I could get from the previous owner was that he bought it from a breakers in Gloucester for £850 as he wanted some parts for a FRST he was restoring? He has removed the cylinder head, the brake servo, and all of the brake lines / fuel lines. As well as cutting a few plugs off the loom

I have an MOT certificate valid from 14/04/2011 to 13/04/2012 with a mileage of 59,771 recorded. So it was on the road less than a year ago and in use, as the mileage now stands at 65,759.

First Registered on the 30/08/1991

The V5 shows 8 previous owners, and a google search reveals it was stolen in 1995, and later recovered from a driveway in Milton Keynes on false plates!
On 17 May 1995 a Ford Fiesta XR2, registration number J57 SRX owned by Mr J D Taylor was stolen. The plaintiffs settled Mr Taylor's claim in accordance with his insurance arrangements and assumed legal title to the vehicle. On 7 December the car was found abandoned in a driveway of an address at Milton Keynes under a false number plate. The Thames Valley police sent for the defendants and instructed them as their agents to arrange for the removal and recovery of the car. This was done. The car was worth £6,000. The defendants retained possession of it.

This is all I've managed to find out about the car, there is no other paperwork, receipts or service books with it :(

Anyway, onto the purpose of this post. Today curiosity got the better of me, so I decided to push her onto the ramp and send her up to find out what I was in for. Now I knew she was fairly clean, but I am pleasantly surprised as how solid it actually is, under the dirt!

Pictures are worth a 1000 words, so...

This is exactly as I bought it, nothing done yet.

Sorry for the excessive amount of pictures, but I wanted to make sure the starting point of the project was well documented, so I can see what I have achieved as I move along!

So, looking forward to the restoration. I have acquired a complete (rotten shed) of an XR2i on a 'H' plate to source the parts that are unfortunately missing from this one. Along with a lucky find - a set of the rare original optional grey XR2i Recaros and matching door cards to replace the RS1800 trim that is in this one.

Will update soon, any comments appreciated!

Cheers for the comments guys, and yes Rs Adz you are right there is 3 in the background. The white accident damaged XR2i is for spares only. The Grey FRST is also to be restored. The one in primer is just a bare shell at the moment, yet to decide what I'm actually going to do with that!

Cheers, I wondered if anyone would spot the replacement wing  unfortunately its not aligned quite right for my OCD so it will have to be removed and refitted properly!

At some time all the arches have been removed as some of them are re-studded, and I think the tailgate has been replaced? As I would have thought a 91 shell would come out of the factory with lines on the tailgate? I'm unsure if I will replace the tailgate, as finding a mk3 tailgate with lines, that is as rust free as the one on the car will be near impossible I imagine!

It's certainly the cleanest I've owned! Yes it is a little dusty (been sat there for the last 8 months as I said) It will get a wash soon

I last owned an XR2i (on a J plate) in 2002. When I got that I had to weld plate along the full length both sides of the floor, replace both sills, numerous plates on the front and rear floor pans, plate around the rear beam mountings, and replace a load of brake pipes just to get an MOT on it (and this was 11 years ago remember!) It was also rotten on the rear panel and the fuel cap area was so bad that the filler neck was no longer attatched to the quarter panel! I never got around to sorting those out properly, I bodged the filler cap back together with fibreglass and a tub of filler, and hid the rot on the back panel with a load of seam sealer. Painted it up with a rattle can and sold it on fairly quickly (now feel sorry for poor person who bought it  )

You will be pleased to hear my repair skills have moved on a bit over the past 11 years, so there will be no bodging with fibreglass and filler on my current restorations :aviator:
