When I first fitted my XR2 engine with 13s and a standard front I saw a speedo reading of 132 chasing a Vauxhall something-or-other down my private race track (errr... honest???). Since the larger wheels, front bumper and use of the engines I have had, although I don't have a top end figure, I can say, hand on heart, that the engine is happy to sit at 100 although it revs far too high for my liking.

I don't for a second doubt you've had a speedo reading of silly-mph, and in most cases it won't be too far wrong. Thing to remember is that short, fast legs (i.e. good top end power and short-ish ratios) usually translate to a short engine life cos of the thrashing the engine needs to stay at speed.

Better to have high torque and long ratios :)

Cheers 16VSi :)

Gear ratios are very interesting, and I'm surprised at how huch difference these can really make. My mate had a Pug 1.9 GTi, but put a 1.6 gear box into it, what a machine, 0-60 was outstanding :o (can't give exact times obviously). I'm pretty sure I'll be doing a 2L conversion in the not too distant future ( :D ), but in the meantime, would anyone recommend a box with good ratios for the standard Si lump? I can get access to this sort of stuff fairly easily, if I know what I'm looking for...
There are 3 kinds of people in this world - those who can count, and those who can't.
