Ka ST170 - 28/03/11 Engine Mount is in.
Ka ST170 - 28/03/11 Engine Mount is in.
With the other sleeper now complete and being developed further, mainly now by Brian, who is using it loads (I have only driven it a handful of times!) we got to talking about the future of that car and have decided to build another sleeper so we can have one each! This will be another build on a reasonable budget, albeit a slightly higher one than the fiesta! Brian is going to build the car with me, and pay for bits along the way, effectively buying me out of the fiesta and leaving us with a car each to develop and enjoy!
So, I have always wanted to do a Ka, a idea I had kinda forgotten until my wifes one got written off, meaning we had to buy another. Driving the one we bought home reminded me how well they handle, and how much fun they could be with a larger engine, brakes and chassis mods!
So my e30 323i was put up for sale and the money raised has gone towards this!
last pic is with my wifes one.
We went to the local salvage place to look at a front ended Ka van, which was sold sadly, we asked if there were any others in and were pointed to this, its a proper base spec early car, ideal to improve upon. The only reason it was in salvage was its stolen recovered and had no keys. £300 later it was mine.
First thing was to try and sort the key situation out, this was done by removing the drivers door barrel and taking it to Clark (knuckles) at Ford to cut a suitable key, we were very lucky and the key works on all the locks and the ignition, meaning the car can be secured and moved around. Obviously this does not solve the PATS issue, but this will be dealt with as part of the running gear conversion.
So, the plans for the car:
Focus ST170 engine, hopefully running Jenveys, but this may have to wait depending on funds. I already have the engine in a car I am breaking.
Aftermarket management, more than likely megasquirt.
IB5 box, as standard on Ka, hopefully I will get a lsd fitted.
Fiesta ST Front Brakes.
15 inch steels to clear brakes and get some rubber on the road!
Buckets and prob stripped out rear.
B&M quickshift if possible.
Prob nitrous as Brian is obsessed and its rubbing off on me lol.
I am currently in a cast as I broke my wrist, so limited to parts gathering at the moment, but hope to crack on with getting the engine out asap, and dummying up the ST170 engine to see what is needed in the way of mounting it on engine side.

Re: New Project - Ka Sleeper
went to the salvage place where we got the car today to raid a 56 plate one in the parts department. We removed the electric windows and central locking, and the nice black doorcards and rear cards. I may yet go for carbon cards in the back if the normal ones look weird without the rear bench fitted, but I have these just in case. We noticed the car had electric mirrors so ended up having those as well, so its on its way to being top of the range now! This happened cos I wanted remote central locking
We also bought some tyres and Brian fitted them to the spare 15inch steels and bought them over today, sadly we didn't have time to fit them up to car today, hopefully next week.
I also tryed a combo of badges
I am abit undecided on the look of the car at the moment, I am tempted to fit colour coded bumpers and some alloys, as I do like cars to look nice and my wifes looks really good with the coded bumpers. But I also like sleepers. Anyone have a opinion on this?
I am hoping this car will make its debut at FITP next year.

Re: New Project - Ka Sleeper
nice little buy there, i like sleeper Ka's myself, but im sure there is gonna be a whole host of different opinions.
i would strip it, lower it on steels and make it handle, go and stop.
no point in making it look good
i may need to get you guys to make me up a cheap NOS kit

Re: New Project - Ka Sleeper
all depends what ya want your car, im the same as ya self still like a car to look nice, and even if you did make it look nice not many people expect a ka to be fast so it would still be a sleeper, i my self love the street ka bumpers with the exhaust going though the reverse light in the bumper

I think you should go for colour coded bumpers, like said above, even fully colour coded, the last thing people are going to think is "f**k that's going to be fast"
Look forward to seeing this progress though

Nice one mate. The cams are a massive limiting factor in the ST170 motor, they really suffocate the engine even with after-market management. If you've got the budget for something better then all good!

I think I will stick a engine in standard, maybe bar arp bolts, then build a higher spec one up, with a view to having it running ASAP. I believe that steves brother is using standard cams in mk1 thou? He has kept vvtc too

Re: New Project - Ka Sleeper
My mate has this engine fitted in his car with throttle bodies and omex managment
1st run was with out vvt connected it made 98hp
2nd after set up with the 45mm jenveys and the omex, vvt starts about 4-4.5k 170hp roughly
Then he had piper fast road cams fitted and it made 192hp with the vvt set to 4k
Thats with eagle rods a JE pistons rev limit is 8.5k
Its now away having ported and polished head and the biggest cat cams for vvt will be fitted. The spec should the produce about 240hp
What you going for. bodies or some standard injection?

Re: New Project - Ka Sleeper
looks to be a fun sleeper mate, i was always to beleieve the inlet was the trick of the secret to the 170's increased power over a normal 2.0l since it is heavily revised.
Was a 'bodied' escort RS2000 in FF dyno shootout bit and that engine also reaps most its benefits from the heavily worked inlet, it only made 152bhp, thats few over standard, will it be the same scenario with the 170??
my lecture in college has a 55 plate, cant remember the trim name, but it had everything, even a six cd changer headunit that actually ate 6 cd's, black leather all round including door cards with blue stitching, electric everything and 14" alloys
i was inpressed

Meant engine out of the Ka mate, but didnt happen cos it pissed down all day. The Focus you are having loom from is untouched (not the one in below pics!)
Did manage to get the cars moved about on drive thou, so i could get audi and mini out to go to new homes, and ka in front of garage.
had to take one gate off and then play with a jack under it to get it thru the gap, had to move the focus about with a crane too as it wasnt rolling lol
tight lol
need to combine these now!
below is the 2 bays, bit of head scratching ahead i think!
hopefully get the Ka engine out friday, but who knows lol. Also have a ib5 box with a lsd fitted on the way, hopefully it will fit, but not sure how different casings are between the ib5s tbh. If no good for this it can defo go in the blue fiesta so its all good!

It depends on the engine mate. If it was from a 1.3 (pushrod) or a 1.8D then the block bolts will line up with the exception of the sump, which is black top 1.8/2.0 specific.
