Are you spacing using stud spacers or spacing the stub axle mounts out?

I did have a set of ford rear beam spacers for mk3/4/5 fiesta, ka, etc., that came on the StreetKa but I sold them to someone. It might have been Brian actually?

10mm, 12.5mm, and 20.5mm, the latter was a 909 part for the racing Puma, and it was never fitted to production cars because they put too much stress on the rear mounting bolts.

Ka ST170 - 05/11/10 - engine dummy fitted.

Postby ~nomad~ on Fri Nov 05, 2010 5:34 pm

Managed to get the engine dummy fitted to the Ka today :D

Basically removed the engine from the ka, and split the box off. Then removed ST engine (actually my mates one he has bought off me) and bolted them together, we simply removed flywheel and clutch from the st engine, as dont have those bits et and obviously it doesnt matter for dummying up!

Its in place, we had to trim abit from the slam panel as the exhaust pully corner of the engine fouls it, normal with this conversion.

So the engine is bolted to the box and the gearbox side is all mounted up. Just head scratching now as to mounting the engine side. There is a kit available which does look really good but it is £250, so f**k that! It basically is a plate that bolts to the car, and then a rs turbo mount bolts to that, this is in turn bolted to another plate that bolts to the rear of engine, using the alternator bracket holes. I think it will be possible to replicate this idea, possibly using a different mount, maybe off a newer car.

anyway, so pictures! I think the engine is pretty much in the right place, maybe a little wonky! The bonnet closes, proof at the bottom.

looking at the pics of the mount i am not sure i like the wa it looks, think i would prefer to use a dogbone type mount, but need to do some research as to weather that will work.

Use of an RST mount? Nah sack that off.

Make sure you use the ST170 engine mount, and keep the Ka gearbox mounting system.

if the alternator bolt hoses are similar or near the mount bolting place of a silvertop, you can do what i done in my mk4, and weld a Si zetec engine bracket to the suspention turret, worked a trick, slap some paint over it and your good to go

focus and ka mounts are very very similar, the problem me have is that the engine is very close to the chassis leg / inner wing, so its going to be a struggle to use those mounts, as they dont fit in the gap! We have not ruled it out, the ka mount would bolt to the bracket on the st170 engine with a bit of modification, and the rubber is alot smaller so might work.

Jony, no offense, but that was a flawed way to mount the engine, as it creates a pivot point at the back, allowing the engine to rock, hence the front mount on zetec mk3s. At very least the part that mounts to car should come right round to the inner wing / chassis leg imho.

we have kept the ka gearbox mountings, no brainer, it all bolts up!

the st mount will need fabrication to the inner wing / inner wing i think

a central mount that goes to inner wing, like the normal ka / focus mount does. I only know of one other st170 converted ka and it has a mount on the back of block to the turret, it bangs the waterpump pully off the chassis leg and wont go round left hand corners right

Scallop that rear turret section. Rather than have the turret face come down to the inner edge of the chassis leg, have it taper down to the outer (wheelarch) side of the leg.

yeah may need to be something along those lines, need to get engine in exactly the right place, then go from there. Bit of a shame, i was hoping for a bolt on solution, which is only possible if mounting at the back it seems. We will work it out!

We raised the engine a little on the drivers side today, just on the jack, to bring it level. The bonnet just about fits still, although I suspect the webbing on the underside of the bonnet is going to be chopped lol.

Think we have a pretty solid plan for the mount now too, we are going to chop the section I have drawn round in the picture below:

Image

and weld in a box section, to which the the mount will bolt (focus st mount bolts from below. Hopefully that will do the trick.

I am still toying with the idea of a removable fron end, like the focus has. I would make future work much easier!

If we made a cardboard template of what we need would you make it up? Can prob do that once bit is cut out. Did you use the st engine mount? Defo wanna retain that, much better than rear mount!

If you make it out of cardboard I should be able to make it up for you. I could not use the standard st mount on the escort as it would have been in the way of everything. I had to mill down the mounting points on the cam cover.

looking at that lack of room...

am i right in thinking its engine out if you need to change timing belt or water pump etc ? :-?

if you can retain the front slam panel it would be for the better as its one of the main strong points.
by the way those top front shock mounts are ready when you are :)
