Ka ST170 - 28/03/11 Engine Mount is in.
Re: Ka ST170 - 05/11/10 - engine dummy fitted.
~nomad~ :Nice one mate, no hurry for them, they will be fitted next year lol.
Engine out for pump etc, this will all be new though, and engine out don't bother me really lol
was wondering for my own info.
as watching a timing belt being done on a normal zetec focus is a bit of a squeeze

Re: Ka ST170 - 05/11/10 - engine dummy fitted.
Did some chop chop just now, basically cut enough out of the inner wing to allow us to bolt the st mount up to the st engine, and then see what will be needed to have it bolt to the car.
After a bit of head scratching we are going to build the chassis / inner wing up to box up to the mount, with a access hole in the inner wing to do the nut up on the mount. I think this is the strongest and neatest solution, and the one that will allow the easiest access to the mount. All in much better than mounting from the rear, which is wrong, wrong, wrong!
Heres some pics then, of a butchered ka!
Also I measured this up a bit when we were at salvage today. I reckon it goes Next winter maybe!

nice idea its what i mite have to do as i want to keep the Stranded mount which the blacktop mounts too, but be so much easier doing it the way you are with a block section with a hole for the mount

The S3 was the worst 'performance' car I have owned It looked the part, but didn't do anything very well. I prefer the Zetec to the 1.8T: it was harsh and 'buzzy'

yeah I know you didnt like it, I have never driven that shape S3, only the current one, which is very good! I did enjoy the engine in the tt though, having lived with it for a while.
For me the 1.8t has good scope for a decent bit of power, for not silly money, which always appears! But its all a "what if" at the mo!

Re: Ka ST170 - 09/11/10 - chop chop buzz buzz
mate popped over to have a look tonight, as he will be tasked with the welding, going to make the bits to put in this week if I have time, and hopefully get them welded in on the weekend. i will also be modifying the chassis leg to create a bit more clearance for the waterpump pulley. Hopefully by the end of next week all the bits that need modifying in the bay and inner arches will be done, and I can get the dummy engine back out and paint the bay.

They weren't originally his design. Lee Blake designed them originally. Joe is the only one who makes them now.
What's wrong with them? In a Ka you want Chris Birkbeck's front and rear gearbox mounts. Engine is like rock and no movement. People are under the illusion that it's the CVH style of mounting that causes excess movement. It is Ford's janky gearbox mounts - but then, they were only designed for a 1.3!

Re: Ka ST170 - 09/11/10 - chop chop buzz buzz
ah its actually the same ka? cool!
its clear that the gearbox mounts are the most important thing in the ka, they seem very good as standard to me, good design, might need to be more solid lol.
But the fact is the rear mounting is a bad idea, it creates a pivot point which is always a bad thing, there is a reason most modern engines in fwd are centrally mounted, and why ford added a front mount to the zetecs.
I am not saying it doesn't work, but the engine can defo be mounted better, people just dont wanna cut their cars up!
Are you still using the Joey / Blakey mount? I think you should go side mount next time you are chopping the car up if so. ou clearly dont mind chopping yours up, and it is better I am sure, I bet you would get the power down better with it!
I keep looking at your thread btw, I am so tempted to chop the front off mine!

Re: Ka ST170 - 09/11/10 - chop chop buzz buzz
Yea it is the same Ka, it was acid dipped and dip primed at aston martin too
I agree the side mounting is better for the engine, but I can assure you 80% of the engine movement I had was down to the gearbox mounts. Both are now solid type mounts. The battery tray mount is also a weak point. I managed to snap one when I had the 1.3. They're very thin cast ally! I modified my battery tray to fit over the top of the new mount.
I won't be chopping my car up again It was a lot of effort!
If you chop the front of yours off and do what we did, you need to lose the plastic reinforcement bar in the bumper. I reckon you don't need to though for that engine. You might as well just keep the standard crossmember. I would deffo get rid of the slam panel and replace it with something. It is just in the way and provides no structure at all really.
And yea I have an original Blakey mount. I think slicks are the answer to seeing the power down Dan (my brother) is trying them out at the mo! He's got some on 15" escort gti wheels. I need some comps to fit over those brakes I got off you! Bet you're wishing you kept all that now

Awesome - Put the whole brake setup on it happy days
You could probably get away with the ST170 handbrake cable too if you route it right. I've used the ST150 one as it's shorter
rallydesign make braided brake lines cheap as well. Will cost about £60 for all 4.

gonna use the rears, but i dont think the fronts will go under the 15s
Got my Sparco seat off Paul S1 today, so will have a look at whats needed to fit that in the week I think.
The mount hasnt been made up yet, due to time / weather.
Not sure whats gonna get done on the car this week really, gonna be very busy with other stuff

Or take another hour to fab up some mounting brackets, weld those to the turret tops, and bolt your strut brace in, so it can be removed when you want to work on fiddly bits
