Re: Ka ST170 - 17/03/11 Small Update Wheels.
Just a wee update, I trial fitted a wheel i borrowed from S1 with a view to buying the set. They are group A gravel spec escort cossie magnisium OZ wheels. The wheel are 7j (sport ka are 6.5) and obviously esccos offset. Happily they fit well, only tried front but if they work there they will be fine in rear. They need a wee spacer, maybe 3mm to be nicely away from the shock, but there is a bit of room in the arch in any case.
bottom pic shows straight down view, proving they dont stick out! These were trial fitted on a Sportka, so same as mine will be when done.

What, with the not-so-opaque tyre that is fitted?

bit difficult to work out without a tyre, the wheel is a couple mm off the shock, so will need a spacer, but nothing massive. This may be different with coilovers too. I thnk they will be fine, they are a inch smaller diameter than sportka ones, so buys me a bit of room there.

Re: Ka ST170 - 17/03/11 Small Update Wheels.
Keep the updates coming! also get a thread going on fk-oc.com the guys there will be interested in seeing this progress.
Im sorting out my sport ka at the moment, have some 300mm st brakes to fit and coilovers to buy at the end of the month. Hope to be running zetec turbo power by FITP, discussing it with a mate who has a garage this week.
Heres some pics of mine so far:
With the tyre rubbing issue, im running ET35 16s and 5mm spacers on the front for my 16"/7.5J if you run 15s ET35 on a normal Ka thats about right, with sport arches you want about ET25 and can go up to 17-18's if you really want

Re: Ka ST170 - 28/03/11 Engine Mount is in.
Got the mount welded in the other day, it needs tidying and some more bits welding in around it to box everything together, this will all be done once car is stripped back to completely bare i think. Its totally solid, as beating it with Thor the lump hammer confirmed, the whole car moved rather than the mount Just wants a tidy up. I also need to see how well the SportKa arch liner fits on the engine mount side, and trim it if needed.
we had to get this done so the dummy engine could come out to go in the Dirtbox. Have to strip another Focus for my engine now
Gave it a blast over in black just to protect it.

There is nothing wrong with the welding of that mount, particularly as there was f**k all space for the guy to get in there and do it.

what you have failed to notice jony is the thickness and the width of the box section supporting the mount underneath.
i was there saturday and looked at this myself. it may look a bit untidy but its solid, as dave said it needs more reinforcing from the sides to finish it off.
Should be better than the original ford one when finished

Re: Ka ST170 - 28/03/11 Engine Mount is in.
lol at people not liking the welds. Done by a VERY experianced welder, took him literelly 5 mins with the engine in place. the reality is, if the other bits were welded in and i had spent 30mins tidying the edges it would look perfect and you would all be wetting yourselves at it.
bit different to a bodge jony, your lack of knowledge shines through as ever!

Re: Ka ST170 - 28/03/11 Engine Mount is in.
how can you say that when you didnt even weld it yourself?!
anyway like i said, if it holds who cares? most of it wont be seen, namely that square tubing, sometimes theres no other way around a bodge other going mental on money, but lets be honest, it aint worth it on these sorta cars, its just a mess about
you'll be glad to know that exhaust mount is ruined already, too much stress on one of them mini exhaust bushes

Re: Ka ST170 - 28/03/11 Engine Mount is in.
the welding on that mount could be classed as over kill nomad, but imo, thats how it should be, rather over kill than under, looks are not important, it looks a good strong weld (and it didnt move when you beat it one ) so thats all that matters at the end of the day.
Plus i know what its like to weld in a cramped space, and how bad welds can end up looking (ive had my fair share ), so that dont look to bad at all! if it matter too much seam seal it or something.

Re: Ka ST170 - 28/03/11 Engine Mount is in.
I think they look bad cos the area wasnt really prepped at all, time was very short all round so it was a case of, weld it in so dummy engine can come out for Brian, and tidy it up later. I will weld some little plates around it to cap the ends of the square tube up, and fill the gap left on the inner wing, then grind everything back. Trust me, it will look very tidy when its done.
Jony, you are missing the point a litte, the plan with this car is to have the install of the engine looking as neat as possible, the Dirtbox was very much a exception to how I normally do things, and more a reflection of Brians style . I prefer things to look right, and trust me, this will do when finished.

Guys, sorry but that isn't the work of a professional welder: there's no where near enough heat gone into that.

For once I am completly going to disagree with you Mark, John has been welding 30 odd years and has done s**t of work for us and have seen plenty of his other work, he is widely regarded as the best welder in the area. The penetration and strength of the welds doesn't lie. Its untidy because the area wasn't prepped, we had to get the mount welded in place so we could remove the engine.

Lack of prep causes spatter/blobs due to poor electrical contact between pieces or contamination, lack of heat and either a lack of speed with the torch or alternatively wire speed too high causes heaped welds like you have there.
I have will agree to disagree mate.
