rsmcelroy :Why dont you put a manual switch for a fan in the centre console, when you are sat in traffic flick the switch and the fans will come straight on. Only bad thing is that they will not come on automatically
DO NOT DO THIS!
If you forget to keep an eye on the temp, or someone else is driving the car and doesn't know about it you're gonna end up with a cooked engine...
Run wiring with a switch between the two wires on the fan switch. You can then override it but it won't prevent it automatically kicking in.

A standard engine doesen't have to overheat at tickover. With an upgraded engine it's a different matter (Exhaust and Intake won't make it run hotter).
If a car (no matter a Fiat or a Maybach) being standard overheats during traffic then it has a problem. Maybe the thermostat, the waterpump, the reservoir cap, then fan or the fan switch are not working propperly. Maybe the rad is blocked. There are several things that might be making the engine overheat. The first thing I would do is a complete check of the cooling circuit. Put some radiator cleaner, trash the car for a few minutes and leave it ticking over for another minutes and then replace the cooling liquid for fresh anti freeze/coolant and complete it with distilled water.
Of course if you are driving at a high speed on the highway and you stop for any reason you will see that the temp rises for a minute or two since the engine is still releasing a lot of heat and the cooling circuit is runing slower and the rad doesen't get as much air as it has been receiving when the cars was in movement, but then the temp must return to a normal range (85ºC - 95ºC). Runing at lower temperatures will only help your engine to wear faster.
If you upgrade the engine remember that a puller fan is more effective than a pusher fan (but the turbo on fistas is at the front and doesen't help at all).
Good luck if you purchase a RS (not even one came to this side of the world )

Run wiring with a switch between the two wires on the fan switch. You can then override it but it won't prevent it automatically kicking in.
IF you do this.. do it properly ..
Create it so it is an override JUST for the Temperatur controlled switch (in the thermostat housing) whilst leaving the function of the temperature controled switch unharmed..
to put it in 'technical' terms.. have the switch (or relay) work parallel to the temperature controlled switch. In that case:
- If the manual switch is turned on .. the fan works .. as long as the ignition key is in position 2. The temperature controled switch is overridden.
- If the manual switch is turned off.. the fan only works when the temperature controled switch is actived by +88C temps .
so i don't see the problem is you do it like that .. but ... be sensable.. use a relay .. why .. well the circuit is a high amp circuit.. and you don't want to lengthen those wires into the car.. and back .. if a relay is used .. the high amps circuit stay's under the bonnet whilst the low amp circuit controls the relay. ..
*If you start to see in Black and White, you know you're pulling enough G's*
