I know this may sound really stupid but have you checked that the wheelnuts are done up tight?
I found that when I got my new wheels I had to keep re-torqueing up the front wheel nuts as the alloy wheel nuts bedded into the new wheels.
When they were working loose they made a knocking noise when under power/over- run and then stopped miraculously when I put the brakes on (something to do with them being under tension or something maybe).
Give it a try mate.
You'll notice wheelbearings (one will normally go worse than the other so will make more noise) check for play when you've got the car jacked up by seeing if you can move the wheel against the hub at all excessively). Another way to check this is to get the car to about 30mph or so and then coast it in neutral turning the car from side to side to see if you can get a groaning noise from them.
Cheers,
Andy
