Legal side of an engine conversion
Hi im just after a bit of information on what exactly you need to do after you have swapped all the engine over? who do you have to notify etc and the tests that need to be carried out on makin it road legal and any info and guides on what to do next and what kind of insurance group it will be put into with a 1.6 non turbo engine? im thinking of doing this but at the moment the legal implectaions are stopping me? thanks

Once the engine is in place you must contact the DVLA and register the new engine number and capacity. Your insurer must be notified and you may be required to arrange an engineers report.
Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience

as said above you will need to update your logbook with the new engine capacity and number, and also inform your insurers of the change. some wont request an engineers report, some will. the insurance group the car is put in once the engine is changed will depend on what car the new engine came from.

you also may be judged on why you want to do the conversion.. generaly unless your going for deisel over petrol.. the only reason is to go faster or drive less safe... apparently.
some just enjoy the sheer engineering side of things..
You can still insure your engine before declairing it. its only the goverment who want to know engine codes, but insurers need to know capacity and horsepower to make your quote.
Adriun Flux insure my 2.0 Si for just about £700 TPFT completly standard, and im 21.. my 1.6 (RIP) was £330 per yeah FC with NU

Oh and just because I like people knowing where they stand.. you know you need insurance.. but if your ever in such a situation which includes you, your engine bay and 2 coppers.. they are not automotive engineers therefore they cannot speculate on your engine's legality.
They can however.. make you goto a MOT test station at your expense to get a road conformity test at any time

im insured with HIC. they insured my 1.4 si TPFT for £280 a year and will insure it with my new 2.5 v6, fully comp and agreed value, for £620 a year. BONUS!
They use the age of the car and the insurance grouping of the car the engine came from. Thats why its better to get the new engine out of something like a modeo estate than out of say an escort

As people have said above (possibly missing out an important detail), you need to fill in your DVLA registration document (can never remember what it's called..it was changed about 20 years ago but I'm stuck with my dad's terminology ) with your new details (i.e. engine capacity and engine number), entering them in the blue section, then sending it off to the DVLA. They will print off a new, altered registration document, and post it back to you. As said, you need to tell your insurers about every modification as well.
When I bolted my Zetec Turbo in, I rang HIC to let them know before it was running, and to step from my 150bhp 1.8 TDI to the 230bhp 1.8 Zetec Turbo cost me a £25 admin charge, no increase in premium!

You should mention that you were talking about heeman10's video though or people are going to think you're mad(der)

it would depend on which engine you started off with, and which one your putting in to change the tax, if you originally had a 1.6 and changed to a 2.0 for example then it will stay in the same bracket, whereas if you change from a 1.1 to a 2.0 then you have to go to your nearest dvla office to pay the extra, as you will move up into the next tax group.
