Limited Slip Differential (LSD) Questions

Postby Stoned on Fri Mar 28, 2003 6:42 pm

I got a few questions about LSD you guys can probably answer

1) Does it stop wheel spin?
My Fez wheel spins on second gear even when doing about 35 when I floor it which is a bit crazy.
I'm hoping a LSD gearbox can temper this a bit

2) How does it work?
Would it make the car slower in any way?

3) How much does it cost to add it to a Fez geabox?

I have a diesel BC gearbox already which is great and I do not want to change this. I would like to add LSD to it though. Does anyone know a place I could get the LSD components for this.

Cheers guys

Hi....

If you have the cash get a Quaife ATB diff, i hear good reports about them :) Burton or other companies sell them for around £490.

Im not an expert on diffs, but i think it will cut down on your wheel spin and distribute power and help traction. So any torque steer should be reduced as well.

If u get hold of Sunny he knows more about them..........i think.

lsd gearbox will not eliminate wheelspin though it will reduce it, it works by transfering the torque to whichever drive wheel has more traction. if you have big power its always going to wheelspin regardless of having an lsd

What is an LSD differential? Quote "Limited-Slip (or Traction Lok - the Ford name, or Posi-Traction, GM name) is a function of the differential allowing one wheel to spin only a percentage faster than the other. This has its advantages in allowing more traction, especially during hard cornering, because a normal or "open" diff will allow the inside wheel to lose traction and spin as fast as it wants, while the outer tire (with most of the traction anyway) just freewheels. This is generally opposite of what you want to have happen. An LSD will allow the inside wheel to spin only so much faster than the outside, at which time it transfers torque to the outer wheel, increasing power that's transmitted to the ground. As the proud owner of a Quaife ATB I can tell you that it does not stop wheelspin or torque steer. In fact it probably increases torque steer as you will generate more torque across the axle. You can buy an ATB from Quaife for £475 but you will have to get it fitted. I would expect you would be better with an RST V/C LSD. It is a bit softer I think.

because in theory you will be able to drive the car faster, have to question wether it will actually add to the amount of wheelspin, you will still get wheelspin though not as much. if the lsd is working correctly it should transfer the torque of the spinning wheel to the one thats not, elimating wheelspin faster. ie in a non lsd car if you are booting it round in circles the inside wheel will spin and no or little drive will be on the outside - an lsd should elimate this. If it your tyres continue to wheel spin surely this must be that both wheels are spinning due more torque than the tyre grip can give on the road surface.

Well, i did say i was no expert

I always thought they would cut down on wheel spin and torque steer, thats what their job is ??

Mmm

I wonder

When I really boot it, the whole car starts jerking madly before taking off.

I always assumed that this is the wheels spinning and actually causing the front of the car too lift off the ground slightly.
Does this sound likely or could it be something else like a clutch slipping ?

Could be wheelspin but could also be the suspension moving around under the stress. Have you checked your bushes and ball joints?

My old FRST juddered when i hammered it from slow speeds, it was the front wheels almost bouncing and spinning..

I cured this by fitting the coilovers and adjusting the front damping

As for LSD, put it this way, my frst used to pull me across 3 lanes of traffic when i hammered it with standard frst box, i fitted an ERST box with LSD and it went straight delightfully..

I am now upgrading to the ATB from Quaife cause of my new engine

My Mk1 has a Quaife LSD and it's awesome. You can drive full throttle with just one hand on the wheel, allowing you to concentrate on changing gear instead of hanging on !!

Definitely a very good investment.
