PUMARST :Hi

very interesting topic. I have a 3 questions:

1) How thick is de-compression plate??
2) How many head gasket did you uesed?? If one where did you put it (between plate and head)
3) how strong this combination is?? Is it good for 14psi of boost or more??

I am interested in these answers, also regarding the extra breather on the rear of the block, nobody seems to be able to tell me how to make one of them...

cheers

yes Mattpym, and i can exclusively reveal that the meaning of life is....

POWER, lots and lots of POWER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D

the de-compression plate is a 2.0mm item
a single head gasket was used between the block and plate
the combination was running at 16Psi of boost and not very reliable at all really as the engine lasted approximately 200 miles, or 4 days of hard abuse, i would recommend a thinner decompression plate and two head gaskets.

the car is running the FRST MAP sensor and has the take off from the zetec manifold at the (looking from the top down at ''EFI'') bottom right and is a standard take off for the manifold.

As for an update, as mentioned above my engine has died a bit, and so this ( and some back-pay) is the perfect excuse for further development. so the engine was removed yet again, and some Accralite forged pistons ordered. the pistons arrived and the entire engine was sent to a local engineering company. to be over-bored to make a 2.1.

all the work carried out was;

pistons machined to 8:1 compression ratio (cosworth YB standard)
block overbored to 86mm bore
cylinder head skimmed
block decked
flywheel lightened
rods machined to make fully floating
flywheel, clutch,crankshaft, pistons and rods balanced

at time of writing the engine is ready to be re-built and run in pictures will follow as soon as i can

you say that the engine lasted aprox 200 miles, what exactly happened after that? and did you not find that your injectors were leaking from the zetec sandwhich plate without the plastic o rings?
also what FRST management were you using?

Just for info the Teflon coated pistons were standard fitment in late series 2 engines.

cheers Excursion. the failiure was down to not re-gapping the rings for the turbo application causing them to snap.

latest update is that the engine is re-built and being run in and the turbo being changed for a cosworth 4x4 t3, and am searching for a T34 if anyone has one :) . also the interior has been stripped and the front seats changed. pics posted asap

sorry for the slow update, the engine has been built and now has covered a happy 6000+ miles, the ofab management is still holding up well to the abuse and, this may shock some of you, the management has yet to be mapped for the zetec.
it is currently running a msd chip with custom map for the cvh motor and the fuelling has been set and checked by simply adjusting the fuel pressure regulator, and now runs 6bar. please note this is only a temporary situation while some further developments are in progress.

i also attended a FiestaClubGB rolling road day at well-lane turbo centre in yorkshire, the car made 234bhp and 218ft/lb @ only 10psi.
Fast ford also attended, should be in the next issue, look out for BIAS motorsport and my fiesta and my mates red fiesta (Andrew Dunn and Graeme Cook in the mag).

When you drill and tap the head for the exhaust manifold does it move it any nearer the rad than the cvh head?

AndysFatRS :also just for a bit of info the 'buckets' for the injectors that i was talking about earlier are these;
Image

Image

If these 'buckets' are from std Zetec intake manifold, then expect a fuel leak at high boost pressure! I'm using Nissan 200SX side feed injectors in place of original Zetec injectors and that 'buckets' are weak link - I noticed that my inlet manifold is brown colored around the injectors when I turned boost up few month ago (now is 18 Psi), when boost was 10 psi there wasn't any sign of fuel leak!!!

Use larger injectors and RIGHT fueling! Piston rings may snap due to lean mixture!!! Just invest few £ for LC-1 with gauge (~£165) and if you see something leaner than 12,2-12,5:1 AFR under boost expect troubles!!!

@rs-tom
Decompression plate i OK for 18Psi - I can prove it! Just use 1,5 mm plate between 2 std gaskets (I've put Payen in mine), torque head as per std engine and boost it up! 1.8 Zetec with 2 gaskets and 1,5mm plate = 8,2:1 CR

hi mate, i assume yours must be faulty or incorrectly fitted as my engine has seen 22psi for a few months with no signs of leakage at all.

and i have used the 'right fuelling' but just reached using higher pressures, has been set up by us using a innovate wideband and checked over by motorsport developments blackpool

hi mate, im looking at building something like your buget build and just wondered if you checked the CR with only one gasket as im thinking of usinf 2 focus rs/st170 gaskets and a 2mm plate was assuming this would be around 8.0.0?? any ideas mate?

can you tell me exactly what the spark plug number is or give me a part number for some suitable plugs for my conversion (zetec turbo)
i am struggling a bit and my part dealer said the number on your spark plug box crosses as a distributer cap which is strange.

Thanks
