lower arms - simple question - how do u know when they need replacing?

o/s one was changed just before i bought the car, but the original one is still on the n/s. The car just passed its MOT even though that arm looks well rusty. Just i've read a lot on here about people changing them and was wondering....

When the rubber bushes show visible signs of perishing, breaking down or splitting. Also change then excessive free-play associated with ball-joint failure is evident (see MOT test checks in Haynes for explanation of how to do this).
