You don't say what car? As a rule of thumb not more than 35mm to retain the handling. There is of course a level of flexability though

I would keep it at 35mm ish but it won't look quite right as you say because the wheels are a bit dinky. You can always change the wheels later.
Mine is dropped 55mm and although it looks good (I think so anyway) it does nothing to help the handling but I had the springs in my spares box

just slam it lol
TBH i dont think it really matters how low you go as long as you have the camber, tracking etc. adjusted accordingly and have shocks that can handle it being that low. In theory the lower you have it the better because of centre of gravity and al that.
Mine is very low on coilovers, the camber is about -1 degrees and the tracking sorted and the handling is pretty amazing IMO

It's far more involved than just slamming it as low as you can get it mate. That's how you will end up with a Fiesta sized hole in a hedge

lol. Don't worry mate I put my first car through a fence, a hedge and a post box I was young and thought I was invincible like all young lads It finished with a huge set of skid marks, a mashed car and a severly damaged ego

lol. Well obviously theres a bit more to it than that but what im saying is if the geometry is set up for the the car to be that low then there shouldnt be any problems. People tend to say if you lower a car too much then it'll ruin the handling, and their explanation is usually 'because it will.'
Ive had my car on Konis which lowered it by about 30-35mm. the handling was good, but when i had it on coilovers and lowered much more the difference is unbeleivable. I have never lost control of my car, ever. And i do take corners hard and play with lift of oversteer etc. When im pushing it to far then it will just start to slide controllably with not much back end movement so its easy to take care of whereas before it would have been all over the place.
Well thats my 2p's worth
