lumpy at low revs

hi all
ive got an G reg XR2I 8v which is very lumpy and a pain to drive at low revs, once the revs are up and im flying its sweet.
The car was standard all round when i bought it so i cant belive theres an aftermarket cam in it (havent checked it out yet though)

Is this normal or could it be somthing else?
