Ok lads.

havent had a chance to update til now.

Ill take it step by step.

Firstly, I realised my PCB diagram was the wrong way round! DOH!

So I sorted that out:-

Image

Once I had this, I printed it out onto Press'n'Peel transfer paper and ironed the image onto the copper board. This came out okay, but i did need to do a bit of touching up with a permanent marker.

Once I was happy with what I had, I put the board in Ecthing solution and let it do its job. This was the result, of which I was pleased!:-

Image

So I drilled all the extra holes required and went about soldering the sockets/plugs/leads and fuse holder on.

I ended up with this:-

Image

Image

I was happy with the board, but not that happy with the way the solder dried. I have left it as it is, but will treat it with laquer to prevent shorts.

Here is my board on the Megasquirt!

Image

Then I thought its time to try it for real on the car!

Image

Image

Turned the key and.......

Fuel Pump primed! Was well chuffed! Tried to start it but it didnt fire! :(

So hooked the laptop up to check the board was working correctly. There is a realtime display and this showed me all sensors were operating!

So I made a few changes to the code, both fuel and spark, and tried again.....

And this time it fired and started idling! Revved up okay, but was hunting on the idle.

On the whole, everything looked cool. I just need to start tuning it properly!

This was all on sunday, but I havent had a chance to tune it since. In the meantime, I slapped the RS1800 ecu back in, and within a few mins I was back up and running as normal!

Ahhh the beauty of the board! Plug and play megasquirt!

Here it is mounted with the ecu bracket:-

Image

Things to do:-

Laquer the board
Maybe get a plastic surround
Read up on tuning the thing
Tune it up!

What ya reckon? :D

ollybee :I wouldn't mind doing this myself. FiestaZetecE has one of these and he really rates them.

I love it :D when you suggested putting the 2.0 throttle body, 2.0/1.8 mondy wide bore maf sensor on the 1.6 and then i got bro to play a bit with the ports all i had to do was spend 30 minutes seting it up again and worked gr8! Different injectors? no worries, i got their impedence or resistance value (not very technical sory) set up the mega accordingly and ran gr8!

Standard ecu's even superchipped ones do not allow you to modify certain settings much over factory defaults, with this you can.

For all those noobs like me who are a danger to any electronic device when they have a soldering iron in their hands, more and more people are selling them ready assembled! You just hook it up, program it, and ready 2 go!

Wiring looms are a bieatch saddly, not many people to help me in that :(

Motorcyclesfish, it takes a lot more than 8 injectors, my old board takes 40ish with the software update. Bro had a wild plan to fit 2 injectors per port on his v-8 b4 he sold it... plus have it control nos at the same time  On a 4 cyl zetec, you can set it to run on 4 injectors till 3000 rpm and then the secondary bank of 4 start firing.
A wise man once said "Fast and Cheap is not Reliable, Reliable and Cheap is not Fast, Fast and Reliable is not Cheap!" He is right.

This looks so cool mate, I'm really tempted to by one of these kits. I'm not being big headed when i say this but i'm good with the old soldering iron. I'm just put off with setting the thing up as i wouldn't have a clue where to start. Need to do some more research on the basic principles of mapping one of these things i think.

Good luck mate. :)

P.S - I didn't think it was possible to run TB's on a standard ECU, so whats the point of being able to swap back to a standard ECU? I'm not being critical when I say this, im just interested.

I think its more to the fact of being neat, as factory, taking longer and making a more professional job!

As max said, this made for a neat install. And I currently have the option to get my car running should the megasquirt need tuning, modding etc.

But you are right, when I get the throttle bodies, I wont be able to use the standard ECU.
Hopefully, I will still be able to use the Existing Loom so again, it will look neat and will have all the fuses and relays in the correct place.

Plus the other thing is the Throttle bodies may take a while as a manifold has to be made and I need to work out which injectors and TPS to use.

The other main thing is that this is now available for all 16v Zetec owners (within limits) to megasquirt their car without having to worry about re-wiring the engine bay!

Asad : I wont be able to use the standard ECU.

thats correct but only cos you wouldnt want to run maf with throttle body, but you could run a speed density eec-iv ecu

not worth the hassle tho

At the moment, I'm not running a Maf anyway.

I have two 2.0l maf sitting here, but I dont have the right pipe to get it on the car.

Plus the fact that im using a RS1800 ecu, I assume the readings would be incorrect anyway... is that right?

Thought i'd give a little update!

I spent a few days messing around. Got it idling pretty much spot on. The idle valve doesnt work as it should in closed loop mode, but i'm looking at some code that corrects this.

drove it round the block but I havent done any proper tuning. Got a rolling road session booked this weekend so will find out if I know enough by then!

In the mean time, I just spend 5 mins to swap ecus' and im away!

It's not a retarded question. Nobody is supposed to know everything.

The first Megasquirt could only manage the fueling, but the new version can also control the ignition

The first megasquirt can control ignition, with a mod.

This is what I have done. You get 12X12 ignition tables to set up the advance etc.

I'm getting ever more tempted to build one of these now!

The building and interfacing with my cars loom I'm fine with - its mapping it up thats worries me.

Im guessing you find a base map for a similar car and then tweak from there?

How do you know what to tweak and in which way? I'm worried that I'll end up with a car that either runs lean and burns a piston out or runs mad rich and uses even more bloody petrol than it does now!

I'd be really greatful if someone with any expereince would have a chat on msn about it.

The mapping is not too difficult to be honest.

You have a Live display with a green dot telling you where you are in terms of Volumetric efficiency. You also have a O2 meter to show whether you are running lean or rich.

You basically increase the VE value at that point so that you run at Stoic. A/F ratio.

If all that fails, hopefully I will have maps soon anyway and I will be sharing them!

You only want to be running an A/F ratio of 14.64:1 at idle or very light throttle openings, for maximum power you'll find A/F ratios of 12.6:1 are often required.

Asad:

Hey dude, I can't see SAW signal (Spout) on your board!?!? Do you run it externaly to car loom?
Also, how did you manage air and coolant temp sensor? Did swap resistors on MS or use EasyTerm? If swaped resistors - tell me please them values.
Sorry for my bad english...

Hi mate,

you are right, I have missed it out! :o

Thankfully you have pointed it before I got to the rollers and started wondering why the ignition was out!

Its just a case of 1 wire from Pin 25 from DB37 going to Pin 36 on the ECU connector. i might just solder a wire.

But here is V1.1 of the board, and I will probably make this tomorrow, so all should be well.

Image

I have made it slightly smaller as it will be more sturdy and make the MS sit higher up the footwell.

Pics when its done!

:D

Well I went to the rolling road on saturday!

The tuner has set up Omex etc before but he was interested the the old 'squirt.

So we started trying to get it idling right and at the correct mixture. This was no problem and after 5 mins we were ready.

Started with a few runs, with him tweaking at most map points. I could see the map taking shape!

Unfortunately we werent able to tune to max rpm - 6000. Only got up to 5200 or something before had to stop due to a bit of smoke coming out the car. It looked oily and we reckon it was down to high temps and it being a little over max (doh)

The other thing that held us back slightly was the fact that I had no spark map. Only the base one was loaded, and I wasnt sure if it was any good. He explained how the Omex had a bullseye target that you can use to tune the spark for optimum performance etc. But there is nothing like that with megatune.

So...... without getting to the point of max rpm on a zetec, and without an optimised map...... the car made....... 120BHP at the wheels!!

The tuner reckoned around 125-130 at 6000 rpm.

Thats around 160bhp at the flywheel I reckon, unless someone can tell me another figure for trans loss.

Not bad from a standard engine bar an old k'n and exhaust!

As for how the car drives, I must say I'm surprised. Its smooth, no flat spots, and pulls all the way up the rev range. Burbles nicely too :D

I think its tuned slightly rich over the range, but with the aid of logging software, I might bring it down for coasting and low revs.

I have yet to tune acceleration enrichment etc, but I have found no problems with the way the car drives.

On sunday I loaded a Zetec spark map just to be on the safe side.
Still drives perfectly!

Im very happy, and now on with my throttle bodies and 245cc injectors!
