Megasquirt ECU Fitted!Throttle Bodies Running!New Head!!PG10
Yep, EDIS 4 has two coils in the 1 coil pack.
Turns out that the mod i will carry out gives me pretty much the same functionality of Megasquirt II.
I will get 12X12 fuel tables and 12X12 Ignition tables. Its simple communication for EDIS too, 1 signal to megasquirt, 1 signal from megasquirt.... makes it easy!

Thanks for the info Asad!
Your setup sounds pretty sweet with all the control it carries out

sorry - didn't realise anyone was taking me seriously, just from what I could see it's got more than one coil to it and I assumed it was 4 (one per cylinder) but it's not.
My point was - that one of the big advantages of the EEC-IV FRST EDIS setup compared to the Cossie or ERST Coil setup is that the spark produced by the EEC-IV is much stronger, meaning it helps deal with that when you up the boost!
It IS better than a coil so that's why it's used for that part of the management - of course there are plenty of other reasons for using it but that in summary is why people like the EEC-IV setup on the ignition side (for example when converting an MFi ERST to OFAB/OFAC etc.) the rest of it is a bonus as well due to the different injector configurations you have
Without going aftermarket the EEC-IV setup is pretty sweet really (says the man who's converted to Weber Marelli! ).
Anyway - I'll stop going on, wasn't trying to make a big point about it
Cheers,
Andy

Regarding EDIS, one of the best descriptions given is at http://www.dainst.com/info/edis/edis.html
One of the adavntages of the eec/edis combination is that the coil dwell time is calculated to give the optimum coil charge time. The eec-iv and eec-v EDIS ignition systems are wasted spark (don't know about the new black oak ecu). Whilst the above link mentions the EDIS system is capable of repetitive spark firing but I've not seen this activated in any eec code yet.

Repetitive firing = MultiSpark?
Its supported by Megasquirt, and I will try and use it. Apparently provides better idle.
Do Zetecs have Knock sensors? Gonna check my haynes when I get home but does anyone know?

I personally think the wasted spark system is a bit dodgy from an engineering point of view, if you're not getting complete combustion then that 2nd spark could well be giving you undesirable ignition.
Also, that might explain the propensity of FRSTs to pop and bang more than most when on a closed throttle with a high duration camshaft with a large overlap period...

A little update
Pic for size comparison:-
I have now modified it to control EDIS, Fan etc
Here you can see the wire creating an ouput in the connector for the Spark Advance Word
A few components have been removed and two resistors soldered in place:-
This LED has been converted to provide the signal for the EDIS:-
I have flashed the chip with the right software and all seems well.
Now I need to get it in there. Will go hunting for an 8v ecu, and replace my EGR while im at it. Lambda sensor is in the post to me as my one has wires missing.
Hopefully have a connector between my loom and megasquirt done over this weekend!

Okay, I havent quite got round to fitting it just yet. Needed the car for a work project so didnt want to get stuck without it...
Anyway, plan is to build the loom off the car, with a new loom.
In the meantime, I have just bought these to go on.....
Should fit on like this....
They are off a Kawasaki ZX636 and are 38mm.
Dunno when I will get round to fitting em!

Right, guess what arrived in the post today....
Dunno when they will be fitted tho. Need to get it up and running with the standard equipment first.
As it stands, I have a 16v loom that I will most like add a parallel connector to. I will leave the original in place, so I should end up with two connectors, one for each ecu.
Hopefully get a bit done over the weekend, more updates then.
I'm itching to get it in!

Ok, another update!
I decided to fit a 16v loom over the weekend.
And at the same time I decided to remove the EGR.
3 of the ports were easy to get off....but in typical fashion, 1 was a Bic™!
It took a bit of effort, in which time I actually distorted the nut. In the end, I used a drift to spin it. Once off, I used the blanking plugs.
Here it is removed: -
Then I got onto removing the old 8v Loom and fitting the sub loom:-
It wasnt too difficult, with me amazingly remembering what connectors went where!
Heres the main loom fitted, with just the O2 wires to route:-
I also fitted a new O2 sensor and wired it up. A lot easier than I thought.
Now, as my car was originally an 8v, the car loom connector is incompatible with the 16v engine connector. I could have cut the connector off the engine side of things, but I didnt really want to start hacking at the loom.
I decided the best course of action was to make an adaptor plug:-
Left hand side is for 16v loom, right hand for 8v.
Quite proud of it! Just need to run a wire to Fuel relay for the HEGO sensor.
And the reason? Well the ECU there is an RS1800 one. I am going to make it so that I can just unplug it and plug in the megasquirt at will!
I will be using this as the final part of the process:-
Raped from a 2.0l DEEP ecu I had. Just need to get a breadboard or something and wire it to the DB7 connector for plug and play!
Should have the car running soon, and possibly megasquirted on the weekend!

Right.
Plugged in my adaptor and.........
Fired up and ran first time!
Have to say a big up to Project XR2i Trackcar as I used his wiring guide.
Ran a wire to the fuse box for the O2 sensor.
No tach and no temp gauges at the moment, need to wire those up too.
Impressions..... Starts much better (First time) and idles properly. Does not feel that fast though. Feels like its holding back somewhat. Maybe its because I have no MAF plugged in...
I have a 2.0l MAF but the piping doesnt fit!
Its all temporary anyway as I hope the have the megasquirt plugged in this weekend!

OK so I didnt get round to fitting the megasquirt... but there is a reason!
Firstly, I modded the megasquirt to run the Ford Idle valve. This required a resistor and transistor to be replaced.
I was in two minds as to how to connect between the Ford wires and the Megasquirt.
I actually started to solder wires to the db37 connector but decided this was the way to proceed:-
I got the ECU connector and got a piece of Copper clad board:-
You might notice that i managed to get it the wrong way round! LOL
Heres the correct one! :-
Im basically gonna make my own PCB with the Ford ECU connector on one end and the DB37 connector on the other.
Here is some practice with the wrong PCB!
And here is a design I made :-
Once im happy with the design and get a Female DB37 connector, im gonna use etching solution and make the board. Then it should just be a case of plugging in the board!
