jonyb4 :well i dont believe theyre actually that fast, but people like that dick percy on FSI swears down theyre the fastest thing since superman..., that and the VTS

i reckon my SI would give one a run for its money

gti definatley quicker and its 200cc less than yrs is, henry's rs1800 was alright but think the gti would be better

106 gti is superior to a mk3 fiesta, id say reliability is their downfall, but then ive never owned a mk3 fiesta i could rely on either.

On the debate about french cars, the 106's/saxo's are a very 'cheap feeling' car to drive. Plus you need size 5 or less feet to make sure you dont mash all the pedals at once. Dont get me wrong the 16v's are a pokey little engine, but saying it will rip jonys to shreds, My old RS used to see em off easy enough :)

ill have you know, my car is very quick considering its mods

its alot quicker than my mk4 was, and its the same engine, and ive not added any other mods!

it even made a civic type R have to work hard earlier, not saying it didnt own me, but it took some doing first, that was yesterday actually :oooh:

simple case behind this is, you cant say how quick it will be untill you try it, you as far as i know have never driven a 130 spec 1.8 Si (the gearbox is the best trick imo)

and ive never driven a VTS/GTi, only a VTR

that looks nice you have given it a clean, bet it will be good on track. I have always really really liked the 106 gti, eversince i first passed my test. I think they look just about right in standard form, dont see so many about these days though, 8-9 years ago they seemed to be very popular.

Ive never actually been in one but seen some around and i can say they do seem to go well esp for a 1.6, arnt they 125ps? not sure on the weight of them but it cant be a lot. Ive never heard that many horror storys about them either, how come their unreliable? or do people just say that becuase its like any hot hatch, its had its nuts thrashed off of it since the day it was bought? then 10 years down the line things are past their best but as I say thats true for any hot hatch.

Yeah, unfortunately with any small hatch these days you get the typical "boy racer" image that goes with it... It is quite a capable car in standard form though. It has had a few years of "abuse", but i don't doubt you can find some very decent examples out there. ITB/Supercharged/turbocharged versions are popping up more regularly now, some even reaching 300+bhp - which (especially for a 1.6) must be quite a handful in such a small car! Ours is very light now that it's been stripped, but were not planning anything quite so extreme!

I haven't really driven it much yet since we got it running for that reason really. I am looking forward to driving it somewhere where hopefully it won't have that image.

Some annoying news - Some retard decided to key a load of cars down my road on Saturday night, and both my octavia and the 106 got done pretty bad... :x
It's really pissed me off to be honest, as i now have to pay out to get my cars fixed for absolutely no reason.

Still, we have got some slightly bigger brakes to go on now (just need shorter bolts). Trial fitted them and they only just fit behind the original 14s. Also I'm still in the process of sorting out picking up the R888's for it off Henry.

Hopefully it will attending it's first track day on the 20th November at a small local track - Lydden Hill.

Its just there so cheap to tune because the parts are so readily available. like my mates 205 rallye with a vts lump. hes had alot of head work done and then ITB's and hes looking at nigh on 180bhp and in a car that weighs about 600kg as its stripped out with one bucket.

Jony TBH i never expected the si (even with 1800) to trouble the 106. My brother had a RS1800 fiesta which I drove recently and it felt very very slow, felt a little more eager past 4k but nothing to worthy of an RS badge IMO.

totally agree, an rs1800 is in vtr league

as much as i have a strong love for mk3 fiesta's
in near standard form they simply cannot compete with the french revvy stuff,

my old track car 106 with a gti lump pulled 150bhp with a air filter, manifold and group n exhaust,
pure rampant!

oh you must be taking the piss...

mate my Si when it had the 1.6 was a contender for a VTR, the VTR is s**t, my 1.8 makes mince meat of them

suddenly because this tuned GTi left me the RS1800 etc is a waste of time...

someone help me out here!

i seem to be the only one here whos lived with the 130 spec 1.8 fiestas and the rest of you are slating it willingly

it would happily compete with a Fiesta ST, yes the RSturbo would eat it up like a full english breaky
it would be quicker than any of the other sporty fiestas, the Zetec s range, including the newest and the diesels. xr2 too

but your right though after 4k it really steps up a notch

They are a quick car but i still maintain my old RS18 used to eat VTS's/GTis in standard trim. The big BUT is that my RS was stripped and running 150bhp.
Saying that it did a proven 0-60 in 7 secs and althogh the VTS is supposed to be somewhere near( some citroen geek will no doubt correct me) every time one pulled up at the lights, they got left. Either the figures are make beleive or the little rascals got more wheelspin then grip

Its not all about power though, a mate had a MK2 XR2 turbo running just over 200bhp and he couldnt get anywhere near off the line or in the twistys, it was only the straights when he blitzed me!! :x

This debate still going?

A fiesta Si, in either form is very slow. With a 130 spec 1.8 it will be quicker obviously, but not as quick as a vts/gti. They are lighter, and more nimble. So on the straights or corners its no contest. Im speaking from experience, not figures or what ive heard.

thank you, nice impartial opinion!

i did mention it beat my Si in 130 1.8 spec, but ic ant speak wether it was tuned engine wise or not

my guess id say it was, as it got quite some distance, even if they are quicker in standard form than a 130 1.8, it wouldnt have gotten that far off :oooh:

so what kinda power can you get from them without going down a charged route?

with out going crazy lol, somewhere on the lines of what is needed to get 200bhp from a 2.0 zetec?

they are quick cars i loved my vts would be faster the 1.8 130 spec quick easy i say as they weight nowt and have good gear ratios

and they are good to tune just manifold good air filter setup and exhaust system makes them 150 bhp then cams on top etc easy to get them to 170 with cams mayb just over 200 with bodies etc, but because there so light and nimble make for a good all round car

Ok, speaking from experience... When I owned this car first time round I actually swapped it for an rs1800 - let's just say the drive home was much more fun!

I'm not slating fiestas or anything here and I didn't want this thread to spear off into a "what's better" thread (although it is interesting hearing peoples views on it). Im not into the whole traffic light racer game either and dont drive this car agressively on the road to prove its faster or better than other cars, so I can't comment on that. I just fancied going down a different route to a track based mk3. If anyone would like to really see how the cars compare, make sure your name is down when the thread for castle combe action day in April pops up :P

in near standard form they simply cannot compete with the french revvy stuff,

my old track car 106 with a gti lump pulled 150bhp with a air filter, manifold and group n exhaust,
pure rampant!

oh you must be taking the piss...

nope as i've driven alot of cars from both sides of the arguement unlike you,

jonyb4 :
i seem to be the only one here whos lived with the 130 spec 1.8 fiestas and the rest of you are slating it willingly

it would happily compete with a Fiesta ST, yes the RSturbo would eat it up like a full english breaky
it would be quicker than any of the other sporty fiestas, the Zetec s range, including the newest and the diesels. xr2 too

but your right though after 4k it really steps up a notch

i've had an rs1800 spec fiesta si for 3 or 4 years now, took the engine out last christmas

I have had both a saxo vts and two RS1800 and both have there plus points but engine wise the gti/vts are great i'd take a gti/vts over another Rs1800 anyday.

I had sooooo much more fun in my vts than either of my rs1800s.

I totally dis agree with this statement - "totally agree, an rs1800 is in vtr league" I owned an RS1800 for 2 years I know for a fact it left VTR's for dead and would keep up with a 106 gti so Im assuming a VTS wouldn't be much different.
