Yamaha wouldn't put in their efforts on the engine for it to be a pile of s**t would they?

funny thing is you cant even joke about this
in all seriousness, i cant see how you can confidently say a 1.6 Se is more tunable than either 1.6 CVH nor 1.8 zetec's (in both N/A and turbo forms)
I'm just going to leave a few words in here.
Pumaspeed
Shawspeed
Both have high power tuning packages for the ZS. The engine is not weaker by design. If you look after your engine, it will look after you. The reason you hear horror stories about the ZSe is because the target market for the ZS (young male drivers) were the sorts to buy the car because it was cheap and easy to insure, and not give a flying f**k about the engine once they were happily ragging around.
The reason that they are apparently weak is that the cheaper cars that you guys are looking at haven't been looked after at all well.
I bet if you bought a brand new 1.6se, did the correct running in procedure and serviced it well and regularly, it would last as long if not longer than the precious 1.6CVH/Zetec.

OC Motorsport. Turbo 200 brake, that's double standard.
Comparing that to a 1.8/2.0 zetec Obviously is lower as it has a lower cubic capacity to start with!
My brother has a MK1 focus, that has the 1.6 zetec sigma lump, it is currently on 160k and still going strong. It was a very well looked after car when he bought it, and I've serviced it every 6 months since...

Re: Mike's Azura.
I have a 1.6 Ghia (Zetec-SE) run around, which when I bought it had covered 40k with full Ford history. I've added another 40k to it since and I've given it a hard life! The engine has lapped it up and still doesn't use a drop of oil.
I service it with Ford oil every 10k, and I never drive it hard from cold.
The engines will last the distance if looked after, but much like the Duratec-HE, when the power creeps up they aren't as physically strong as their predecessors. Lightness does come with some penalties

anyway!
were all here because (at some point) we all loved a mk3, so none of this is a surprise, the good thing about a mk4/5 is that they feel new, fresh and firm, steering is sharp and handling is informative, but they lack more than a mk3 imo, character is a biggy
I can confidently say this, because its true. The power output compared to the cubic capacity is generally better for a sigma than the zetec or cvh. Companies offer a wider range of tuning packages predominatly n/a for the sigma, but as Trecoll mentions theres OC motorsport, or even the van Aaken turbo. The cvh is ancient now, and zetecs (ph1/2) arent far behind. Should we begin to count the amount of cvh/zetecs that have run low on oil and needed replacing, i know of quite a few.
My zs has covered well over 100k now, its been serviced as it should, doesnt use any oil, and is still producing over the standard bhp. I dont think its fair to believe everything you read on the internet, then post it as fact on here, when looking at the population of sigma engined cars on here at the moment you appear to be wrong.

load of cheese tbh mate, you think that the Xr2i's were the rag toy back in the day? just because we werent old enough to see it happen
most the 2is around today have been ragged, and ofcourse are suffering from it, they run crap, have worn piston rings and bores, but they still dont spit con rods every time the oil drops below minimum, the Se engine is dubbed a toothbrush engine for its disposable nature, by many ford employees
and no offence 2 tuning companies isnt much of a responce for the dozens of zetec and CVH tuners, i wont even bother making a list
but by all means im not saying theyre poo engines, they just dont seem as strong as the proper zetec, for instance, throw 500bhp at a standard Se crank and id love to see it survive

Mike's Azura.
You are saying they're poo engines. Every time you open your mouth about them, they're weak, they're s**t, they're not tuneable, they need oil...
If the engine was such a weak design why is a derivative of it still used to this very day?
I'm not really talking about putting big power through them anyway - no engine with 130bhp from the factory is designed to take 500bhp (as your example showed), and things need to be uprated - that's by design. Ford don't develop an engine that is designed to be fiddled with.
Oil is essential for ANY engine. When you say that an SE throws a conrod every time it goes below empty that is exactly what I'm talking about - bad maintenance. You are supposed to check your oil once a week. If it blows up because you didn't check it then that is YOUR problem, not the engine manufacturers! ("Hello Ford customer service, your engines are rubbish because I didn't follow your well publicised guidelines and when the oil ran out the engine blew up. This is your fault - why should your engines need oil?")
Why is that so difficult to understand? If an SE is maintained properly (like ANY other modern engine), it will outlive its ageing counterparts.
How many Ford employees have you spoken to to find out that the SE's are dubbed 'toothbrush engines'?
Ford employees aren't going to slate their own products, it would be economic suicide, so are you reading this on Yahoo! Answers?
Sorry Mike, this has gone way off topic. Most cars that age will have bodywork repairs by now, as long as it drives ok and is HPI clear I see no issues

Re: Mike's Azura.
nick chill the heck out dude, its just friendly chit chat...
i say theyre weak engines, because soon as the bottom end starts to knock, you have to throw the whole engine away (well minus the head if you like) because the way they were made makes it so non-cost effective to replace the shims and bearings, so it writes off many older mk4/5s
and because the way they tend to drink oil, the oil level drops faster than most expect, and lets be honest no bugger checks the oil weekly...
where as another random engine, be it zetec or what ever, you simply remove the oil, sump, big end cap, replace the failed shim and your done!
but i certainly dont know why they drink oil (those that do)
come on now guys keep it friendly, no need to get anoyed, mike if this isnt what you want in your thread, i apologise and will ask for a clean up

Yeah well at least it's not just been left - like someone's attempted to sort it and tbh done an alright job, just bugging me now I know it's there as I like my shiny cars!
May be time for a respray

Re: Mike's Azura. allo. question.
oh! and ive stripped the interior bar the front seats because im doing something fancy with the roof liner and door cards
so for the minute i hae a racecar (joking please!)
also im selling bits off the 1.8 and sacking that idea off. i think im going to leave an engine conversion in the back seat for a few months and just get a 1.6 cvh as i can DEFINTELY get insured on that. whereas the 1.8 was unreal.
also ordered some blackdiamond 260mm brakes and mintex pads, as they fit in the calipers i have now and im not arsed about massive brkes, just something better than cheese.
thinking of doing something special to the pov bumpers too but not sure what yet
watch this space! i hae mtiation and money

Re: Mike's Azura. allo. question.
does it smoke when it's run? check the water header tank for any signs of contamination, also worth sniffing it as my HG has gone an the header tank reeks of petrol, also check ya dipstick for contamination (milky residue) and under your oil
cap, does it use water or does the level stay still? when it's running look in the header tank and seeing you can see bubbles coming up?
if you've done these and your still unsure get a compression test or
a ph test done, both of these will tell you....

Ok so there's no problem with the head gasket.
This is the problem.
It back. And this time it's fudgekin worse need another new sump plug?!
Oh and I striped it out to retrim the rear bench and door cards as I have something cool in mind. Then this happened when I found a marvel comic annual from the 80's!
Some will hate - most will actually but personally I think it looks really good.

Tell me what you think? But don't be overly honest as it did take sometime to do.
