Mixture problems with cone filters

Postby festaturbo on Sat Jun 01, 2002 9:47 pm

I keep hearing about cone filters and how they can cause mixture problems on certain cars? Does this apply to the FRST? Why do the cause mixture problems? I still am not 100% sure on which i prefer cone or box.

Sonetimes, the location of cone filters might just suck in ot air from the turbo which is in the case of FRST. I have a cone in mine, had a RR n was told that box might be a better alternative. It's all up to ya.

A cone filter will not disturb the mixture, because the air from the turbo is all controlled before entering the plenum.
Mixture problems come from cars like Corsas (sorry for the disgusting language) etc.....etc....

With the use of the ducting pipe that cone filter will get plenty of cool air, you will only get heatsoak when at a standstill.......and it doesnt really matter about airflow then.

cheers :)

I have a piper-X cone on my 2i. Sucks in alot of air & really needs a chip mapped to suit air/fuel mix. Next on my list :D

I have got one on my 2i 8v too!!!
I think that the fuelling could be better mapped to the airflow!

Ahmed Bajoo says that cone filters should not be used as when u close the bonnet hot air gets sucked in, so id use the standard air box but drill a few holes in it and buy an uprated panel filter.

When you are driving there is lots and lots of cool air flowing through your engine bay.......the cone filter will get plenty of cool air.

The only time it will take in hot air is when you are stopped and thats due to no air movement. But an airbox does not protect from heat, it will also get warm due to heat soak.........it is only plastic!!
