mk 3 fez si
Re: mk 3 fez si
jonyb4 :MB7201 :Thats alright, just to make sure you need to hold the camshaft (and not by the locking tool) to undo them. I think there is a flat on the cams where a spanner can be used, but a pulley holding tool is recommended. I'd suggest initially undoing the pulley bolts without the bar in place to avoid putting pressure on the cams and damaging them
spot on mate
although since i was also lacking this tool, i wedged a few screw drivers/chisels in between head and spokes of the pulley, not ideal but it holds up to the 85NM (if i recall right) it takes to tighten the bolts holding the pulleys on
why not get a mk3 1.4 Si mate? cheap tax to run and insurance, yets till somewhat sporty and good looking
dalsy i seen a 'thanks to' bit from Niel in fast ford's 'the fleet' today on niels track car, nice mate your few words of fame for me
That's what I did but the other cam pulley bolt is on tight as hell and wedging the screwdriver and trying to undo the bolt with the ratchet is causing me to wreak the bolt so I need to be able to put both hands on the ratchet as I undo it to stop the bolt rounding.
So went to HALFRUDS and looked for a holder and there was non they dont sell them the usless over prices indistinguished ruffians so I will have to look else were tomorrow.
And to be honest mate there really not that cheap to insure for me I am getting quotes for £1200 3rd party only on a 1.2 I only paid £1500 on the 1.6 si and £1800 insured under the 2 litre engine.
But the ford ka only comes to £870 which I can afford.
I dont like the ford KA but I need a car I wont do up, I need a car that just does the job gets me from A to B but if I get another fezzie I will want to be sorting rust spots out and fitting better parts and before I know it I will end up skint all the time again so with the KA if there is a rust patch I wont care as long as it sails an mot I will be happy lol.
But I may put in a 1.8 or a 2 litre at one point such a small car with a big power lump would be fun lol.

Re: mk 3 fez si
Well had a right time getting my timing belt on but its on.
The inlet cam pulley was no bother but the exhaust cam pulley was a nightmare, the bolt was so tight I ended up rounding the bolt.
So my old and faithful friend mr grinder had to come out and have a word or two or three with the cam pulley bolt lol.
I left the cam in place as I did not want to take the risk of the cam getting chipped inside the holding vice so I wrapped tin foil around the bottom off the engine to protect the pump gaskets and plastic pulley wheels on the water pump while I was grinding away.
My make shift cam holder so I could take the old pulley off the broken cam lol.
Took off the plate on the block to give behind and the plate a clean to get all the metal fillings and oil off so no crap messed with the timing belt.
Cleaned up plate back on.
I was concerned about the bits off crap that had got in around the tappets but I was going to just flush the engine out but I decided to stop being lazy and just clean out the area properly as flushing it I think wont guarantee to get rid off the crap but I will still give the engine a flush once its in the car.
All in all a lot happier engine so I am more than happy and now work can go forward.
Couple of other snaps.
It looks a lot worse than it is honest lol.

Trail fitted the inlet pipe today to make sure it would clear the manifold and thankfully it does.
Just need to drill the mounting holes in the rocker cover so I can bolt it down.
Striped the TB and primed it ready for it to be sprayed black to match the rocker cover and inlet pipe.
Same deal with the inlet too
Also got my self a second rocker cover so I am busy cleaning it down and I may do some kind of design on it when I paint it, I was thinking of claw marks ripping across it but i shall see.

About £130 for the manifold and I cant remember what the rest cost but it came to little over £300 for the full system I cant wait to get it all fitted up to hear it.
And yea I am not one for painting stuff up in the bay either I am more for function over look but I am going to repaint the rocker cover as when the water pump seal give up the game it cooked the engine so much so that the paint on the rocker cover had started to bubble so I did not want to have this lovely clean looking freshly painted rocker cover and then this horrible dirty TB and inlet it would just make it look an eye sour, I would have just cleaned up the metal but it would not take long for it to get full of crap again so if its painted black you wont see the dirt build up which will be better in the long run.

Re: mk 3 fez si
well a little update engine is in.
i decided to do the same as jonnyb4 and do it with a trolley and jack only i did it a bit different and that was by laying my engine on the trolley on its side instead of upright and then once it was in the engine bay lifting it up to the upright position (not easy when your doing it on your own) this meant i did not have to lift the car so high.

Re: mk 3 fez si
hi all a wee update.
after getting the engine in i decided to take an easy day and have rest from the car for the day plus i dont think my family members could put up with another day of swearing and temper tantrums from me lol.
so today i got up bright and early to make a start on getting the gear box in and boy am i glad i did lol.
i decided to just drop the engine back out of the car and fit the gear box to the engine while it was on the trolley somthing i really should have done in the 1st place.
so the plan was to just repeat the same process as i used to get the engine but bloody hell was it a tight squeeze lowering that car over the engine it literally needed to be lowered a few CM the up round the front to check its clearance then back to the jack again it would have been so much easier with a second pair of hands but all my mates are lasy indistinguished ruffians lol.
then i had the problem of the engine mountbolts not lining up with the holes so the gear box had to be jacked up and the very tense job of wiggling and swaying the engine and gear box into place that was one job i am not so keen to do again, the hole time all i could think was hog you drop this engine and your f**cked my man lol.
but its in now so i am happy,in truth looking at the engine in the car with box made me smile as when you see it lie that you get the feeling that its all starting to come together and that really is a good feeling today was the 1stt time i have smiled at that car in months so it was a welcome feeling.
some pics
ii will take some pics of the engine bolted in as literally as soon as i too those pics the heavens opened and i went from nice hot sunny perfect working on the car weather to a bloody rain storm which i had to work in the rest of the job lol

Re: mk 3 fez si
a bit of a update on the fez which has me thinking and thinking hard which hurts my brain lol.
1st of all i seem to have totally fudged up my cam timing up so i will have to sort that.
2nd i had a rather interesting offer today.
story goes back when i had the car on the road i raced a escort rs2000 (on private land of course hehe) and after that i became quite good friends with the guy and found out he also had a m3 fiesta in his work garage that they used as a armature rally car.
so to cut a long story short he came to see me today telling me that the fez he had had been rolled over and twisted the shell beyond repair as with the roll cage and as he had been told my car was off the road due to bodge jobs kicking my arse and the lack of money i have due to only being on training money for the next year he wondered if i would sell him my shell so they could build up the rally car.
he just wants the bare shell and nothing else and he made a on the spot offer of £300 too but i said i will think about it.
so for the next few days i think i will be having a good hard think about it, so if i decided to do it there my be some goodies going up for sale soon as like i say he only wants the bare shell so i will have a hole si worth of parts to sell which probably get me more money than it would if i sold the car hole.

thats just plain and simple contradicting yourself, if you rushed it and cut corners with used pum ps (btw theyr elike £17 on ebay whats the point in skipping it), its your fault you f**cked it up... knob head
surely fitting it right and makign it las tis more important then bodging it just to get it on the road faster, and coming back next week to do the same thing again

and sure thing jonny you should think about alloys i will do you a nice deal on them, all parts are available bar the engine, wiring loom, engine mounts and ecu i am keeping all that for my next car
