Mk1 focus tdci loss of power

Problem or technical question?

Mk1 focus tdci loss of power

Postby adamr6698 on Thu Sep 12, 2013 8:26 pm

Evening chaps.

My daily driver is a mk1 focus 1.8 tdci (lynx deisel i do beleive) and it has suddenly lost 99% of it's power.

it seems almost normal up to when the turbo should kick in (about 2,000rpm), and then completely flat from then on through the rev range. i have checked all the boost pipes and there's no apparent cracked/split/lose hoses, and the turbo is still working, well it sounds like it is anyway.

this problem began on friday night (7th). i don't know if any of you guys saw a seaside place called Saltburn on the news but where i live is basically next door to it and the floods were horrendous. i never went through anything that was more than axle-deep and i've checked my air intake and it all seems totally perfect so i know there's no debris clogging it etc.

before this problem, it has never pulled well at all over 3,000rpm.

my guess at the moment is that the pick-up pump in the tank could be clogged and couldn't cope with the demands of 3,000 or more revs, and that now it has almost given up completely. i've checked autodata and the time is about 2 hours (providing nothing's seized etc i presume) so i'm going to have a go myself over the coming weekend.

if anyone has come across these or similar symptoms before could you let me know if i'm going to be wasting my time please? lol. also, if any else has any ideas i'd appreciate the help/advice :) at first i thought it could be the turbo with it feeling flat from 2,000rpm onwards but i've done a bit of research (googling) and i'm starting to think (and hope) that that's not the case. plus, the pick-up pump is a lot easier to do than a turbo

cheers in advance guys

How did you do that mate? I'm not sure where my egr is. I've been told it's right out of the way down near the bulkhead and a nightmare to do. I'm not bothered about it being difficult, just if you can tell me what you did it'll help. Was yours a mk1?

just blanked off the egr valve hoping the power would come back and it hasn't worked.

no i'm stuck.

could try a code reader but i don't know if there's any faults stored cos the eml's not on.

hhhmmmmmmmm

might have a go at the fuel pump in the tank like i said in my initial post.

not hopeful though lol

just sorted it! i was putting the top half of the airbox back on and noticed a little vac pipe had a tiny cut in it. bit of duck tape, power's back. thank f**k for that.

feel like a bit of a tool now cos i'd taken the inlet manifold off all apart from 1 nut ready to clean the egr haha.

i'd already checked the vac pipes too. must have missed it.

chuffed now.

cheers for your help mate
