Mk1 FRS - Winterised! (01/11/14)
Mk1 FRS - Winterised! (01/11/14)
Right then, now the secret is out after bringing it to ford fair, its time I started a thread on the new purchase!
My original plan was to create a sleeper out of the 1.1 runabout which has been in the family for a number of years now, but with time constraints and the cost of fuel to travel all the way to the garage in wales every weekend to do the conversion meant that doing this project became more and more difficult, and no longer seemed to make sense
I costed it all up (including insurance), and worked out that I could use the savings that I have been building up for a number of years now, and push the boat out and get a mk1 FRS. This would be the best of all worlds then, as it is a practical and useable RS, fast, more refined, more modern (and therefore less rusty!!), basically a perfect all rounder, also wearing the RS badge
After alot of searching over a good few weeks, I finally came across this gem. Two previous owners before me, the first being a bank manager for three years, then the guy I bought it off, who has had it for seven years and basically used it as a sunny day “toy”, with it being kept in a carpeted and heated garage for the rest of the time. One year he only did a couple of thousand miles in it!
It is completely standard and unmolested, with original dealer plates and sticker to finish it off! Got full ford service history, all receipts, all work has been done at ford, every single tax disc and MOT etc, and is low milage too (just ticked over 46k on my way back from ford fair)
To top things off, as it is completely standard, insurance is £900 cheaper than it would be to insure the si!!
Anyway, enough rambling, here are some pics:
Let me know what you think

Re: The new Car!
Cheers buddy, this is definitely the best descision I have made in terms of car purchasing, such a good car!
With this being completely standard too, its suprising how well ford built them in the first place. Suspension is just right, power is excellent, handling is out of this world, I'm a big fan
What build number was yours mate?
What is the mk2 like as a comparison?

Luck isnt part of it mate, hell of alot of work went into earning the money I saved over the last few years
RST will still be restored as a long term project, still unsure about the si's fate tho, as I dont think I would get enough money by selling it to make it worth selling, and it means alot to me. Will have to see...

I couldnt reccommend your descision enough, absolutely excellent car, and a brilliant all rounder!
They are currently priced between about £6k for the high milage worn out ones to about £11-12k for the minters
Best bet is to keep a lookout, took me a good few months to find mine

No worries Jony, didnt offend, was just pointing out the situation
In terms of the 1.1, make me an offer (this with full RST running gear)...

And yes, excellent all rounder. One of the reasons I bought this one, and its such a good car, best descision I have ever made!

Very nice! I really like these. The journalists didn't seem to get on with the Quafie and branded it 'track biased', but I never got that. Great car IMO.

Looks nice, I actually had one until earlier this year but had nothing but problems with it so sold it, was a nice car but it left me a bit disheartened. Having much more fun in my RST.
The reports aren't too wrong, in the lanes etc I would have been able to drive an st170 faster then the RS could, even with 267bhp. It just cannot control all the power and handle great, but taking nothing away they are great cars.

I have been considering putting ambers on it from day one, love the look of them but at the same time it would be moving away from standard then. Maybe I could pretent its an OEM+ mod
Opinions on ambers welcome guys
Excursion :Very nice! I really like these. The journalists didn't seem to get on with the Quafie and branded it 'track biased', but I never got that. Great car IMO.
Cheers Mark. Its an excellent car to drive, so planted and the power delivery is beautifully progressive
When flooring it on an uneven road you are fighting the steering wheel a bit, but makes it more fun to drive imo

Sounds like you just had a bad experience/were unlucky mate. I know of plenty of mk1 FRS's pushing out a reliable 300 bhp, and not having any problems along the way.
I would have to disagree about the st170 arguement too, other than slight torque steer, the handling of this is far superior due to the wider track etc

You can buy the 1.1 if you like. It was my sleeper project which I stopped to buy this car instead, as I realised time restraints etc meant the project didnt make sense and would probably never get finished

Lovely, just the sort of thing I think I'll be looking for in a couple of years time. May as well given that I've got the largest collection of new Focus RS parts in private hands and hold all the remaining stock of many items! Cheap project car me-thinks!
Get those bits you collected off me at RSOC National Day fitted under the bonnet though!! It's a cracker, keep it standard and it will only go up in value.
If there's anything else you need for it let me know

As we discussed at National day, it would make sense for you to get one of these and do a concours job on it! Best descision I have made buying this car, such an excellent all rounder! I would highly reccommend it to anyone
I have already fitted some of the parts I got from you at National day, will update the thread with pics shortly. Just got the last few bits and pieces to fit which I will be doing this weekend all being well
Already got a mental list of what else I want for it, will send you an email when I have it all collected together in my mind

I can't understand that tbh, bearing in mind I have a torsen diff which is very similar to the ATB, I find it unendingly friendly to drive and very easy to predict. Unless I put rubbish tyres on, that is.
I've always had a lump in my pants for the FRS, they're also pretty rare up here unlike the FRS2. That's a lovely example too Dave, good call.
Nothing to see here...

I completely agree with you aswell, when pushing the car hard on an uneven road surface, there is a bit of twitchyness but it is easy to both predict and correct, I think its an excellent bit of kit considering the power through the front wheels. Anyone knocking it probably havnt driven it!
I know what you mean about rare too, dont think I have ever seen one up my way in Sheffield, and you never really see them on the roads either

Still undecided about ambers, love the contrast but then it isnt how the car left the factory then, and i think I want to stick to factory. Just dont know tbh

Re: Mk1 FRS - Currently in bits! (04/01/13)
Right then, this thread is long overdue an update!
I took the car off the road on 14th October, as a problem arose with the intercooler water pump (common on these cars - the bushes in the pump wear out). Basically it wasnt pumping all the time (which it should do as it is an electric pump)
To get to the pump (front passenger side, front of wheel arch), the inner arch liners need removing, and it is a hell of alot easier with the front bumper off, so I removed this too. To get the bumper off, the headlights need removing, and while I was at it, I also removed the wings
Pics:
Once stripped, I changed the pumps over:
Then started the car up, and there still wasnt a flow of coolant into the header tank
Turned out there was an air lock, had to take one of the top hoses off and literally pour coolant in at the hose until it overflowed
Then got this:
Well happy!
That was just before christmas, so now it is done, its time to freshen up everything I have uncovered whilst stripping the car, then put it all back together for spring
Going to paint up tired looking parts (including intercooler rad), and replace with new where applicable
Also going to get the front bumper resprayed as it is covered in stone chips
Finally, I got a solar trickle charger to maintain the battery, £10 from maplins, excellent piece of kit
That is all so far, all comments welcome!

Cheers Mark, and yes, I have to agree. Not too big to work on but a nice scale up from the fiesta
And as you say, these cars were definitely not "badge engineering", as Ford made alot of changes to the body shell itsself as well as the components fitted. 70% of the components are non standard, and ford made a £4000 loss on each car produced due to cost of parts
