I don't get tyre stretch!?

Someone explain it to me :(? Because I need new tyres and want stretch but I'm dumb as with this - wheels are currently 195/45/14.

Good news on the cvh too ;)

6j

stretching is when the tyres are plain too narrow for the rims width, its borderline dangerous and mostly ugly imo

175 on a 7 inch rim is stupid lol, 185 at best :Q

I personally love stretched tyres if not taken too far, and only on certain wheels. And mike, you put tyres not wide enough on the rins, but fit the bead on as usual, if done properly can be safe and look amazing, but i take it you knew this already and wanted an explanation of how much of a thinner tyre you would need etc??

I get what it is!

But I dont get the numbers. Is 40/45 etc the sidewall width? If so I understand more than I thought haha

Say you have 145/70/13's
145 is the thickness, the 70 is the profile(so sort of sidewall) and the 13 is the wheel diameter. So if you want to stretch yours tyres you need to downsize the width.

the profile 195/45/15 part is a percentage of the tread width, it determinds the size of the tyre wall, the 15 is the diameter from bead to bead for the wheels it fits

Michael, I'm running 195 45 14s on the mk1.

But if you want a bit of stretch( presuming yours are 6j) try either 175/50/14 or 165/55/14

Surely they should be 13's as pepperpots are 13"??

Thanks Jon/matt for clearing that up!

Whats the best tyre for that size though I've only found faulkens that make it.

Yeah I was on about the polo wheels but now I know I can apply it to the pepperpots too, incidentally - pepperpots look really
Good on slammed polo and fit over the gti brakes  may have to get adapters and save myself money...

Sorry for hijacking your thread too mate :)

Maybe some g60 steels for the lopo?? I'd imagine adaptors aint tht cheap?? But pots would look very different on it!!
Also, i have been debating whether to polish my pepperpots, getting rid of the paint and making them shiny?? :)

I think g60's are the perfect wheel! Trying to get some cheap adapters so I can put pepperpots on the polo

Yeah I had a polished lip on mine and when it was clean it looked mean as!

Lol yeah gets stupid, I'd go for the si imo, more reliable, better conditions normaly and easier to find, and it makes a 2.0 conversion piss easy
compared to an XR2i

I do prefer 2i's though, if an si came up i probably wouldnt say no, if i had a 2i i probably wouldnt be worried about doing an engine conversion for a while anyway :) you say the si is more reliable, i'd imagine the 1.8 2i or rs1800 would be just as reliable??

certainly, they might be more likely to being ragged, but maybe not, 8v 2is were abused in the 90's big time

i said the 1800's might have been ragged more than a 1600 simply because the 1800s are faster cars :-?

if you find a Si/ghia 1600 in good condition, its simple enough to paint and fit a 2i/RS kit anyway :)

I would want to fit the kit to an si, but a ghia would be 4 door and i dont like 4 door 2i's, hence why i have si bumpers :)
Yeah i guess i would be hard pushed to find a non rusty xr2i that hasnt been ragged!! :(

the ones that aint rusty tend to be low mileage, and they have a big price tag, atleast a grand these days, for a car which engine usually gets swapped for something like a turbo or 2.0 zetec seems a bit daft

it is nice to say you have an XR though, most dads know what they are too

Yeah the sun really brings the colour out!! :) it looks best at sunset imo. A good exhaust system would sor the car tbh as my exhaust sounds terrible and blows, even when its welded it finds a new place, the previous owner replaced it 'cat' back and the pattern exhaust is crap!!
