mk3 wishbone problem

Postby waxdaddy on Thu Jan 30, 2014 6:28 pm

Hi guys well I've come by another mk3 fiesta this time an early xr2i (1.6 no power steering).

It needs a couple of bits for the MOT so not having time to do it myself I put it into a local garage and got the parts myself... In this case two new front wishbones.

When fitted one wheel (nearside) lines up spot on when the steering wheel is centred but the offside wheel is out by a good 15-20 degress and doesn't come in line till you turn the steering 90 degrees to the near side (obviously turning the correct wheel out)

I presumed the offside arm had been bagged wrong (so did the parts supplier) and we swapped it out... still no good... we changed to a different set of wishbones from a different supplier and same thing...

The first part numbers supplied were QSA1650S and QSA1651S, the second set were FCA5667 and FCA5666.

These don't appear to be the same size as the old ones which would explain it I guess. Any ideas? Can I fix it just by adjusting the offside tracking to bring the wheel into alignment? or do I need different wishbones? Doing a bit of research I can see that there is a 3 rivet and 2 rivet version of the arm. The new ones I have are all 3 rivet, the ones i've taken off are both 2 rivet? does it make a difference?

Dont think the amount of rivets makes a difference, there are slightly different arms for rst's that have a bit more camber. Having changed my wishbones the other day I can confirm it puts the tracking out, in my case miles out, so try getting that done first

There are mk3 and mk3.5 arms too. Some manufacturers and/or traders list them all the same.

If I remember rightly 2 rivit are mk3 and 3 are mk3.5 .. There's also A difference in length of the wishbones between certain models and the ball joints different between mk3 and mk3.5 ... I would defo say they've given you the wrong wishbone(s)

There are a pair of genuine ones on Ebay

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-FIESTA-M ... 20dea0bf4e

The same guy has the other side listed as well, these are 3 rivot ones,

I've recently bought a genuine set of FRST ones (£85ish each :oooh: ) and they are 3 rivot also.

Sounds more like a tracking issue than a wishbone issue.
Some ball joints, like for the Frst at longer then others, and when fitted will alter the camber and tracking, so check you have 2 which are the same, and not one normal and one Frst.

The arms them self, are the same size etc, the angle of the holes do differ between Frst/power steering models and std models.

2 rivet is older style, 3 rivet were the replacement to 2 rivet, and 3 rivet is std fit on all mk3.5 models

At the too in tech section is a sticky thread about bottom arms, take a look fella
