right here we go,
you will need:-
-mk4 interior light
-stanley knife
-electrical tape
-pliers
-drill
-hacksaw
-file (or dremmel cutting tool)
first you need to cut out a section of the headlining with a stanley knife, the indented part around the light but leave an inch or so spare

the light will have 3 spade clips on take these off and insulate them so they don't touch anything (i got through plenty of 15a fuses finding this out) connect these to the new light i'm not sure which goes where but a bit of trial and error should do the trick. You want it so the light comes on when the door is open with the switch in the middle.



the roof needs to have some holes cut in it to accomadate the new fixings don't worry though no-one will see it so bodge it up as much as you like. I used a drill some pliers and a file but you would be better off using a dremmel or saw-drill bit.

Measure the prong things on the light, the distance between, how wide the are and how deep they are ind transfer this onto the metal. drill a pilot hole (don't press too hard or you'll end up with dents in your roof) best off tho put some tape on to stop the drill slipping. then cut out the holes to the measurements you have just taken. it should look something like this



now it's time to trial fit your lamp i cut the plastic support bits on the side of the metal prongs to make it fit better but if you wanted to be real professional you could allow for these in your roof holes. I also used my pliers to squash the prongs in for a looser fit. if your lamp fits but won't sit flush like mine did get a big hammer and bash it in, seriously dont worry about your roof cause it's a separate piece of metal. finish in some anti rust paint and (in the words of neil buchannon) it should look something like this

oh and incase anyone asks i dont know about the ghia one with the map lights but i hear the witring is the same

its a very easy thing to do... all ive gotta do on mine is cut the bit that goes above the rear 1/4 windows as the shpe of the rear at the top is slightly different! oh and also due to the fitting of the windscreen, you can see it from the outside slightly!

done both of these like 18months ago! ive got the map lights from the ghia x in mine tho

i've just put an led blue bulb in but the bulb i got was wrong but i bent the connectors to make it fit it was one with the cap on both ends like a tube but it was slightly smaller than the normal bulb so i had to make it fit

Eventually got it in, Had to literally remove the whole of the back of the light to get it in though! And you can see the arwldite seeping out

nice one mate i see you managed it, i was gonna take some pics but mines got a bit of a loose connection somewhere so i didnt want to mess with it. only prob i have with mine is i was a bit enthusiastic with the stanley and you can see the cut edge from the passenger side, oh well

Yea, But when i looked at my friends old mk4 the light clipped into the headlining and not into metal where as everythings different on mk3's and the clips didnt seem to lign up anywhere.

no i saw when i removed the light i used they do clip into the metal but i took the measurements for the holes i cut from the light itself best way to make sure it fits. the only problem i had was the metal bit stuck out too much on the inside of the roof of my car so i had to tw8t it with a big hammer

I haven't started mine yet, but looking at it... There is a fold of metal where about the wires/plugs go between the roof and the ceiling... is it safe to cut a bit of this out to accomodate the wires... or could I prehaps move the clips around on the light itself so they are point towards the screen rather than the back...
