Mk4 Silvertop Zetec 16v -- aim is 140bhp, 2.0 cams in!
Re: My fiesta, red mk4 s2 16v BIG BRAKES! Engine is fitted!!!
very well said toby,
while being a sheep is all good and easy to achieve, you wont feel so proud when you see another mk4/5 with the same engine sitting in it next to yours at a show stand
excuse me but your being a bit stereotypical there, my particular 1.8 has 73,000miles, the car iself has done 74,000
my mothers mk4 1.25 has done 79k, the mk4 1.4 i broke around september last year had done 98k or so
what has yours done nick?
so that isnt a good way to put it lol
and the zetec weights aroudn the same as my old HCS did id imagine, since its a cast iron block, but alloy head, where as the hcs was iron block AND head
and yea toby id be upping to 130spec soon as i can really, will then have more power than the 1.7 after only speding around £100- £150 quid

much heavier, and have many more miles than the newer, lighter, Yamaha lumps

What can I say? We aren't going to agree on this so we might as well just agree to disagree. My car is on 80k at the moment.
To summarize my POV:
If I were to do a "Zetec" conversion, I'd do a 2.0l
If I had the time and money and expertise and if my car wasn't my everyday car I'd probably do a totally different conversion (as in other than a 1.7).
I know it may not be the best (which I've already said) but its my conversion of choice in my current status!

1.8 is more fun as all the power is up high. only go for a 2l if yr gona turbo it in the end i think. hb69 will back me up on that

Re: My fiesta, red mk4 s2 16v BIG BRAKES! Engine is fitted!!!
well apperently you have been saying it for yonks,
but the 1.7 is no less "everyday usuable" than your very own 1.25 the pumas made very good everyday cars, look at all them hair dressers going to work in them
put it this way
the zetec conversion is no more challenging than a duratec st150 upgrade, and both offer the same kinda power levels and performance upgrades, for the future
difference is, ppl go for the duratec instead, even though its more of a job as it runs on more advanced eletronics and is more expensive,
worried me a bit there toby

What? All I've said is that my conversion of choice would be the 1.7. I don't understand what you mean about the 1.7 being "no less usuable than your very own 1.25"?? I meant that its plug and play. I don't have to worry about different types of ECU, I don't have to worry about engine mounts, and that once its in its a fair upgrade from the 1.25....

you were saying how you need it to be good for everyday use, well a 1.7 would be
and you'd need a 1.7 ecu and loom

I agree with Toby, wouldnt bother with a 2.0 zetec again unless i was turboing it. The rs1800 engine is by far the most fun and felt the quickest ive owned

after coming back in, and asking around, andy/a3wk suggested it could be the fuel cut off switch, then i went to check, remembered i had to unplug it to take the ecu loom out, so bridged it for the time being as loom is still everywhere
and the result after some seconds of filling the lines...

Almost there
It will only be a sensor somewhere. What inlet sensor loom are you using, si?

i still have the 1.8 ones in the old inlet, should i try them first?

Does kinda sound like a fuelling issue to me, especially the first one. I remember trying to rev mine without the fuel pump going and it did the same

Re: My fiesta, red mk4 s2 16v Up and running!!
how do you mean wayne?
the very first vid is it running on a supplement starter spray can, so wasnt actually running on the cars fuel system, later turned out i forgot the plug the fuel pump trip switch back in, so no fuelw as coming through (pump wasnt priming)
that was sorted, but now it dies out after a few secs idle, and refuse to rev up
or do you mean first problem vid?
Will my standard 1.3 fuel pump be ok for this engine? an increase of 500cc can be considered alot

It'll never idle right without the maf connected, get that and filter / pipe on before going any further.
As for the SE / Zetec arguement, there can be no doubt the zetec is the better engine, the 1.25 is a massive bag of crap engine, the 1.4 is revvy fun but not at all fast and the 1.7 is the best of a bad bunch. Jony has shown how easy the zetec goes in, there is no excuse now for fitting the crappy SE!
I have to agree that it should have been a 2ltr, but thats easy enough to sort as and when Jony wants too, I am not sure why anyone would think the 1.8 is better because of the "power being up high" the only difference between my 2ltr mk3 and my 1.8 mk3 is that the 2ltr is faster lol.

it was still connected just paced in where the radiator was, the inlet and filter was off in first vids as i was using a form of easy start when the pump wasnt working, if you notice in the last two after the shutter door was opened it was put back on the throttle body

lol very well said i dont think easy is the right word, but if i can get it done almost on my own, im sure the other masterminds on this forum can do it with ease

i dont really have a preference on this, since i aint driven either yet, but i choose the 1.8 as im only 19/20 so im not in need of massive power yet, and it was a cheaper option, and more fuel economic, im sure id like to swap it for a 2.0 in the future

Have you blocked the 2 vacume pipes on the back of the inlet? If not that's why it won't idle. Same with the breather that runs from front to back, and the master cylinder vacume pipe, just make sure they are all sealed and blanked accordingly

I mean fully connected mate, not just on the loom, with the pipe from throttle body to maf to filter, so as it would be completed

Re: My fiesta, red mk4 s2 16v Up and running!!
umm i was thinking about vacuum pipes last night also, on the mk4 there is a pipe that was connectred to the 1.3 inlet, so i though it be best to connect it to the zetecs inlet too,
ill start with that then , like you said that would have dire effects on the idling, i have no idea where is goes lol, cant see why the loom would need it
cheers ill let you know how it turns out
will it fuel more with 2.0l injectors??
silly after fitting a 1.8 lol but id like it to be fuel eco as possible

2.0 injectors will be fine, i used them on my 1.8. Any vacuum leaks will totally f**k up your idle!

Re: My fiesta, red mk4 s2 16v Up and running!!
well well well, what an evening lol
went down the garage, i was pacing up and down, checking everything
swapping plugs over checkign the sensors, swapping them for spares, reading the manuals
come about 6ish i was abotu to give up without a clue and consult the forum for any help, and a mate piped round, we were trying to figure it out, then he suggested its the fuel pump, as the revs are fine at first then as the pressure eases off it struggles and dies, so fuel pump was top of our minds
my marte phoned a mate whos done a few RS2000 conversions into a mk3 fez and has a ERST run around etc, so anyway, mate picked him up fromt he beach, todl me to take my rear beam off, was two minutes in the back of the car
he asked "you got car battery or power supply of somesort, 12v?) handed him a bump starter, suggested he earthed it on the door catch, and connected the positive to a bear backed purple wire going to the pump, "try starting it"
up she went fine, ticking over loudly yet happily, words cant describe my relief and excitement
he recoomended that i run a wire from the ignition live to the puple wire on the pump, so when ever the ignition is on, the pump will be perminantly priming, bad side is i cant leave the engine off with ignition on for long as the pump will still be running, so i might install a switch for safe measure near the steering coloum
this may seem drastic, but its a price im willing to pay
Video: ( smoke coing from manifold area is surplus PAS fluid burning off the exhaust downpipe)
i can now start to reasemble it, no excuses now, no reasons to hold back, sooner i crack on, sooner im driving it again
BTW my 94 mk3 1.3 fiesta is now forsale, its comepleted, were asking £350 for it, fully welded and MOT'd
went down the garage, i was pacing up and down, checking everything
swapping plugs over checkign the sensors, swapping them for spares, reading the manuals

Re: My fiesta, red mk4 s2 16v Up and running!!
That is a pretty dodgy way of wiring a pump in mate, I think you may just need a better one?

Sounds like the fuel pump relay cant be much good, tried another? Defo dont wire it in like that though.
