Re: mk5 1.3
Greetings.
You can't really modify them and make a lot of difference. Even if you chuck thousands of pounds at it still not going to be a quick car. So it's Puma 1700 engine conversion or, wait a few years if NCB is required and then Puma 1700 engine conversion. If you have to wait spend the money on suspension and brakes ready for the engine.

Re: mk5 1.3
Two general rules of tuning apply here.
1. Theres no replacement for Displacement. if the engine is a low capacity then theres not much chance of getting a high power output without thousands of pounds in custom parts for it.
2. Make it stop and turn before making it go. Upgrade the brakes and suspension ready for a higher powered engine otherwise youll throw in the 1700, go flying into a corner at 45 and wind up in a field.

Dude, its his first car - I dont think thats much of an option!!
You won't get much out of that Endura lump, its only 65/70bhp as standard. You could do exhaust/air filter but that would make the car output 67/72bhp instead.
Best bet is to keep it standard until you get a few yrs NCB behind you, then look at engine conversions.
I'm currently in negotiations with an engineering company who specialise in Italian cars to see if I can get an induction kit made up for the 1.25 engine. If it all goes well I'll give you his number.
(The proven gains with this particular style of induction kit are more low-to-mid range torque and ~10bhp increase - a guy who they RR'd had a 1.2 punto putting out 80bhp, with exhaust and air filter it was just under a ton bhp!!)

Re: mk5 1.3
I think the 1.3 is only about 60bhp you are better of fitting the 1.25 75bhp of 1.4 90bhp zetec as you can tune them quite abit.
