leighk2010 :
rs220bhp :Whats the gearbox out of mate? I have a few zetec starters i can send you one if you cover the postage, Help get things moving again.

its a hddi box out of a mk5 fiesta so dont think the zetec ones would fit, im looking for more info on how to run the slivertop sump on the blacktop engine and if this will make the engine any worse as jony says the sump is what gives the blacktop engine some of its strength

Don't do it. Use the nice sump

its the webbing and internal structer that makes them stronger

removing that much shouldnt be too dire

removing tha section is fine mate

as the guys have said, its the windage tray that gives the blacktop sump its strength, but to be honest ive ran my st170 engine all last year with teh silvertop sump with no surge issues

Update...

well today been up to mums garage and removed the sump ready for me to modify. So that i can use a front mount starter which saves me having to source yet another gearbox and will allow me to keep the hddi box i have.

after many hours of head scratching managed to get the sump off. With it been a two piece sump and much better design over the slivertop one piece sump. Reason it took me so long to remove as i was trying to take it all off in one go, but you have to split the two halves first as the oil pick up pipes stops you from removing it as one piece.

here is pics of the section i have got to remove to allow the starter to fit and bolt to the box

Image
Image

will be fun to remove tomorrow with the good old angel grander..

Also after a accident with the engine crane i ended up with a big lump on the head and...

Image

One smashed headlight could of been worse but i took the bigger impact from the crane

enjoy!

haha did it hurt? :(

nasty abotu the lights though but liek you said coulda been a lot worse!

that sump cutting looks straight forward enough, dont use a cutting disc though, too tempremental

use a hack saw, you can avoid damaging it then

well been and trail fitted sump and need a tiny touch more off a bit i thought would be no problems then its done ! only down side is now depending on how the tddi starter motor is im going to have to have my manifold modified to clear it but no biggy i guess

few more pics:
Image
Image

as you can see the manifold needs about a inch adding so the starter can sit nice and perfect.

next job quickly grind down the bit that it still stopping the starter sitting flat then paint it sliver so nice and new again!

to much hassle the st170 is a very good standard manifold and same as a 4 branch so it needs a tiny bit adding to it will probs cost max £20 at powerflow then will clear the starter fine

But as i will be going mtx75 box at some point this is just a temp measure to use the front starter on the tddi box

i need to get some 12mm plate welded to the chasis leg to help strengthen the area were i am adding the engine mount, and also gives me some nice metal to drill and tap into so i can bolt the engine mount down.

There is still a long list of stuff whats needs to be done to the car but hoping to try and start getting it done a bit quicker this year. Things still to do..

• Fit fuel tank and lines
• Have engine mount brackets welded in
• Source flywheel and buy clutch
• Do head gasket on engine cams back in timed up etc
• Find new non abs master cylinder
• Drive shafts back in
• Block the two holes off on steering rack to convert to manual rack
• Source better brakes then the 260 setup i have
• Focus radiator and pipe work for engine cooling
• New brake lines
• Source air filter and fuel filter

once all of this is done the car should be up and running and hopefully working!

need a money tree

No, it's because the rack is 2.4 turns, lock-to-lock. It feels just like a quick rack should without assistance.

wel before work stops or not here are the last few updates

after taking a little more of the sump the starter now fits better but need about a inch adding in the manifold to clear it but this will be no problem

Image
Image

next up is all the stuff lying around which i dont need at all and is taking up space

Image
Image

then next up have come up with the finale desgin on how im going to mount the engine into the bay

here is a cut down focus/cougar mount
Image

i then plan on having these bits of metal welded to the leg like so..
Image

which then will allow me to drill and tap and bolt the bracket down as it would in a focus
Image

then last but not least making a L shaped bracket out of 3-6mm steel and having this welded to the wing area with a nut on the bottom to allow this to be bolt down also
Image

And finally head is off to check engine as i have not done this since picking it up all moves nice and free, and here is the head all safe and sound which i will treat to new valve seals etc why its off

Image

and also my rocker cover which just need some lacquer

You did a fantastic job of the rocker cover - anyone can stick a load of stickers on something, but the ones you used all complenet each other really well!
