Mk5 Zetec Tuning

Postby PhilsFiesta.8k.Com on Tue Feb 03, 2004 10:53 pm

Im strongly considering a 1.25 or a 1.4 zetec fiesta soon. Ive looked at their figures(see below)

1.25 Zetec 3d (99-01) 73bhp 104mph 12.7secs
1.4 Zetec 3d (99-00) 88bhp 110mph 11.0secs

Now what im thinking is these cars must weigh nothing cause there is only 15bhp difference between the two engines and you get nearly a 3sec quicker time to 60mph! Im living in ireland and the 1.25 and in plentyfull supply but the 1.4 are very rare. Basically what i want to know is what can i do to these engines to give them a lot more grunt? I was talking to someone off this site on msn with a mk4 si who was getting amazing power outa his. Any help appreciated!

The gearing's different between the 2 which accounts for most of the time differences. The 1.4's got a bit more grunt over the smaller capacity motor and responds well to the usual filter, chip, exhaust, fse bolt-ons - certainly gives it ZS-beating power.

It makes better economic sense to ditch the engine altogether and have something bigger slotted in rather than tune the small zetec-se cars for "big" power. £1000 gets you a 1.6 Zetec-S engine transplanted, which with the 1.25 gearbox gives you some rapid acceleration times.

I've got a tuned 1.7 from the Puma in my car and with this set up you'll get anywhere from the standard 125bhp to closer to 155bhp, which is Ford Racing Puma power. Some people claim anywhere up to 180bhp with naturally-aspirated Puma engines, but few have the guts to prove it on the rollers.

Try http://www.ukfiestanetwork.co.uk/forum if you've got any questions on tha later Fiesta models - there are a few of your fellow countrymen and women on there too.
