Had a productive last couple of days and now (at last! :aaah: ) the gearbox is fitted to the engine :Q

All required shims have been made + fitted and the diff turns exactly as it should now, as does the rest of the gearset.

This morning I fitted the new speedo sensor trigger ring, firstly the diff bearings had to be removed from the diff.

Image

Then the ring was fitted onto the diff, followed by the bearing - this was then pressed home by the hydraulic press.

Image

Image

Lucky I changed diffs actually because the later MK3 Mondeos didn't have a Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) in the gearbox so there was no trigger ring either - I'd have never known that, had I not stripped the 'box down! :oooh:

Here's where we're up to today - Engine & 'box joined together, starter motor also fitted.

Image

I need to visit the scrappy this week and remove the driveshaft extension from a MK3 Mondy as my 2.0 Focus Zetec one is (not surprisingly) nowhere near the correct fit on the back of the Duratec block

Bye for now

jonboisxr2i :whats next then???

Hopefully there'll still be some people in work on Monday so I can get a hand lifting the whole powertrain onto the trolley that you can see in the pic, then it's portable enough for me to get it to the other end of the workshop where the crane and lifts are (about 100 metres' walk).

Still got to de-grease and steam-clean the engine bay (on Monday), then grind of the remains of the battery tray and the original Fiesta engine mounting point (just as I did with the Manj) - Then the 'bay is ready for dummy-fitting to commence :D

Got to get to the scrappy and get that driveshaft centre bearing and extension from the MK3 Mondy.

Get the driveshaft that needs shortening into Cober Precision Engineering (£££ )

Got to get in touch with Earls hoses and order some hose and fittings for the turbo oil & water lines (I'm not waiting to fit them once the engine is in the car! :aaah: )

Somehow raise some cash to buy the Omex 710, Omex loom, 3 Bar MAP sensor, Injectors, Fuel Pump, Fuel pressure regulator to list just a few expenses still in the way of completion! :oooh:

Ha those last two comments made me laugh

HCS Pimp: Yes my Duratec has 4 pots as opposed to the 5 found on the Volvo 2.5 in the ST, that's why it makes so much sense - it's a physically smaller engine (roughly the same as a zetec) but has almost as much capacity as the ST 2.5. For the amount I've spent so far I could have easily picked up an ST 2.5 Turbo lump & transmission but it would have been a Bic™ to fit into a MK3 'Bay :aaah: (I'm sure someone will so it soon though - probably me! :bonkers: )

The turbo I'm using (Garrett GT28R) is "only" capable of 330BHP maxxed-out so a rough estimate of 290-310BHP is much more likely TBH, which I'm sure will be enough to make my little Fez quite sprightly! :)

Very true mate - I've had plenty of highly-strung n/a engines in my time (including a £5k connaught 220bhp zetec) and whilst they're fun at full chat, they're very difficult to live with in normal driving conditions (i.e heavy traffic! ). I'm hoping for a big (300lb/ft+ ) shove in the back from relatively low revs, whatever the gear but it'll still hopefully rev quite high too, what with the Duratec having such great breathing as standard :)

I don't think I'd go as far as mid-engined but I'd definitely consider building a RWD MK3 Escort with a Duratec-Turbo mounted to a Mazda 6-speed box (Increasingly being used in old skool fords - see this month's Classic Ford).

So Jimmy if I want an mtx-75 fitting to my mk6 fiesta (duratec turbo)

I'm best off buying a mondeo mk3 mtx-75 gearbox, will I still be able use what speed sensor I currently have?

Mine ATM on the ib5 is on the box, i'm sure you know what I mean mate

i'm after an mtx-75 so this would be ideal for me if it is as I can get mondeo gearbox's quite cheap - it's just the quaife diff that costs

Hi everyone, been a busy boy the last couple of days! :D

Firstly the engine has been dummy-fitted and the mounting points are all tack-welded in place :Q

Took a trip to the scrappy and found a nice, straight set of bonnet hinges to replace my horrid, bent ones - they were on a Moondust Silver K-Plate MK3 of all things too :)

Image

Removed the Duratec MTX driveshaft bearing from the block of a MK3 Mondy, unfortunately the bearing size was much smaller than that of the Focus MK1 2.0 Zetec so the MIG had to step in! Here's my hybrid bearing (Focus Bearing housing with Mondeo block mounting plate).

Image

Removed my grotty old battery tray (Still got black bogeys from all the grinding!)

Image

Removed the MK3 Fiesta Engine mounting point (Needed for access to Duratec Alternator) - Ditto about the bogeys!

Image

Do you reckon it fits?! :-? (Two bloody hopes!  )

Image

As above, I had to remove sh*tloads of ancilliary parts before the lump would finally get in the hole. I really want to use the inlet but it will need to be made smaller with some creativie TIG action - If it's a crap casting and doesn't take weld I'll have to start from scratch with a new inlet

Image

We're in! :)

Image

Image

Image

After a whole day of f*cking about, swearing, gashing my hands and getting molten steel in my hair I finally got the whole lot lined up correctly and tack-welded the transmission and engine mounting points in :Q

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

That's all until next week when I'll be squaring the engine bay away - I'll be fabricating fresh metal around the mounting points (and jumping on them to "load test" them!), I had to chop a bit of metal out fo the inner-wing to clear the chunky MTX75 so I'll be adding some strength back in somewhere it won't foul the gearbox.

After that I'll be cleaning it all down, seam-sealing then priming the 'bay then hopefully getting it all sprayed Moondust Silver.

Bye for now

Hi Jay are you refering to the small cut-out part in the lower front panel? Yeah I originally cut that piece out to clear the Duratec oIl filter housing but I'll be welding a small curved piece of steel in there next week to neaten it up :)

That's the problem with fitting something that was never supposed to be there - there's bits sticking out where there wouldn't normally be! :aaah:

Another update everyone :D

Today I welded the mounting points in properly and sorted the clearance for the MTX 75/inner wing/chassis rail.

For the gearbox mounting I started by mocking the required piece in card first.

Image

Then started making a duplicate in mild steel...

Image

Image

Image

All welded in :aviator:

Image

Same detail for the engine mounting point, card first...

Image

All done.

Image

Here you can see the area that has been created to clear the gearbox - once the gap was opened up, I used some 4mm thick mild steel to restore the strength to the chassis rail and inner wing - should look a lot nicer once the seam sealer has been applied and it's all painted.

Image

Here's the small area that had to be removed to provide a bit more clearance around the Duratec Oil Filter housing - to be honest I was a bit "previous" by hacking it out in the first place - once I had everything lined up properly there was a bit more space than I first thought, ah well better safe than sorry! Still got to sort the top out - ran out of time today.

Image

Next update should hopefully have the engine bay stripped, cleaned, rubbed down and primed,

Bye for now and have a great Christmas

as for the front, better to have too much space than not engine, the fez engine bay can be a bit restriced even on the FRST let alone that monster your putting in!

Cheers mate, yeah there's not a great deal that needs removing, the photo doesn't really give a good perspective of the depth that I've taken out unfortunately - it's probably about 15-20mm or so including "room for error" as I don't want any nasty vibrations when giving it some serious hammer! :aviator:
