Sounds like you're well practiced in giving the Mrs bump-steers! I'm on my second marriage and plan on keeping this one!
Managed to get into the workshop for a couple of hours today and finish off welding the front panel oil filter clearance piece. All welds have been cleaned and fully seam-sealed, I've also managed to make a start on masking off the car ready for priming the engine bay - I'll be back on it after Christmas, most likely the 27th or so

Re: MK3 2.3 Duratec-Turbo. New Update 22nd Dec 08
Hi everyone, hope you had a good Crimbo?
We're another stage closer now - engine bay is all resprayed and looking a damn site more presentable than it was a few days ago!
I applied seam-sealer to all the exposed welds, followed by 2 coats of primer, waited 24hrs then 2 coats of Moondust Silver, another 24hrs then 2 coats of lacquer. I know it's not exactly pro-standard but I've at least achieved my aim of making the engine bay look presentable!
Little comparison...
Next on the list is fitting the gear linkage and hydraulic clutch pipes, then I can dump the engine & 'box in properly and stop them cluttering the workshop up before everyone gets back from leave!

Cheers Feersum - This time I'm sticking with a conventional servo & master cylinder setup as I like good brakes for normal (busy) stop/start traffic conditions rather than the balance-bar pedal box setup that I had in the Manj which I didn't like much I'll be fitting an Escort RS2K MK5 Servo/MC though as I'll be using EsCos front calipers and MK5 RS2K rears and I don't want a pedal that has to travel 6" before it does anything!

Yeah may just do that yet mate - Without that panel in place much greater airflow can get through the engine bay, so more heat can be removed via the louvers in the scuttle panel. As the "hot" side of my engine is at the rear of my engine bay it's definitely worth considering On the other hand I quite like the "factory-fitted" look when it comes to my conversions, so with all those panels in place, the Duratec will look even more like it was always supposed to live there
I'll see how hot she runs and decide then....

Re: MK3 2.3 Duratec-Turbo. 'Bay painted 29th Dec 08
how about using a remote servo setup mate ?
they were used in the old BMW's and Mg's, would solve alot of problems for you and give you more room for piping etc

Re: MK3 2.3 Duratec-Turbo. 'Bay painted 29th Dec 08
Another busy day, managed to fit the gearshift setup and keep it all looking factory-fit (almost! )
Firstly I gave the car a clean as, despite my best efforts to keep it covered, there was metal-dust all over the place due to my efforts with grinders/mig etc over the last few weeks, that all needed removing before it could start rusting and end up trashing my nice bodywork!
Check out the cheesy sticker on the rear 'screen I would keep it a proper sleeper but I need some recognition for all this graft, so there it is!
Fitted all hydraulic clutch and PAS pipes that would be a Bic™ to fit once that beast of an engine is in the hole.
There was a bit of a setback today when I tried to mount the gearlever mechanism inside the car and bolt it through the floor (as I did with my previous ST170 transmission). Unfortunately, the Mondeo MK3 gearlever mech is HUUUGE and if fitted there would mean a very tall gearlever (as found in a Bus! ). Worse still, the centre console would never clear the cable shift & selector mech so a bit of creativity had to step in!
Here's how high up everything was originally!
Basically I made a steel cradle up that allows the mechanism to bolt in from beneath the car, saving me a vital couple of inches - this was duly fitted and now everything fits and looks ok.
Trim re-fitted, full range of gearlever movement too!
Still got to do a bit of tidying underneath but the hard work's done - not touching the car again until after some serious New Year's drinking!

Have a look at my last project mate "The Manj" I used 2 of the buggers - both AP-Lockheed too (£££ ). They're ok but never give positive braking as the factory item can, I'll definitely be using a standard Ford Escort one

Love the way you're making the effort to keep things looking factory instead of just hacking up the easy bits with no regard for aesthetics

Cheers mate Just doing what I did with the ST170 transmission last time TBH, was a bit more tricky this time due to the chunky Mondeo mechanism. There's lots of different ways of getting the MTX in though, you can use modified Escort MK5 RS2000 gearbox mounts and gear linkage, or the Mondeo/Focus parts - tricky to fit but far stronger than a 'BC box and cost peanuts!

if i were to use the RS2k mounts and linkage i would have to swap the casings again to an rs2k item not the focus RS one :'( am one my 3rd bellhousing as i had to swap to a TDci focus oine to fit it to a cvh then decided to go blacktop turbo so had to buy yet another gearbox and swap it back to a petrol one!
plus a cable is easier to fit than a rod one as you can route it how you wish to maintain the required tightness on the cables lol
i know what you mean about the linkage being massive tho, ive got a genuine focus RS one and its still huge!

Good progress mate, coming along well! Did you have much trouble fitting the steering linkage in the end? How much modification did you have to do to the original hole?
