Kittie :
BigUKG :I'm quite a golf fan, all models apart from the Mk3 really!

Mk3? Never heard of it! *ladedaladeda*

 Like it!! It probably is best to just forget they ever existed.... then you don't get depressed that VW had no idea what they were doing. TBH, they didn't know what they were doing with the MK3 or MK4 GTi. The MK5 is bringing back the proper feel of the "Original Hot Hatch" and the MK6 will be even better I'm sure, even if it is slowly turning into a Scirocco or what ever they are!

dontpannic :Just browsing a few threads on UKFN and come across this nugget of advice for more Fiesta drivers wanting golfs -

Benham @ UKFN : If you go down the Golf route, get as late a mk4 as possible, the early ones where not good to be honest.

Early ones can be a bargain, but petrols especially suffer quite a few ignition problems and they're not afraid of the odd HGF either. Gearboxes occasionally crumble to peices too. Being a Volkswagen they're never the cheapest things to repair, this is probably the crunch.

Regards,
Andy

Thanks for that mate, the older ones always have such high mileage as well... around the S/T Reg marks. The latest I'll go is 2000 registered, but 51 Reg would be idea really. The plan is to get a Cat D one, which you can pic up for as little as £600. Parts are expensive but it'll still work out cheaper and I've got lots of family prepared to do the work and get it back on the road if I fund parts.

Had a knock on the front n/s, needs a new wing and the steering is "a bit funny" apparently. But its an R reg and its done 17,000 original miles.

He only wants £200 for it to get it out of the way so gonna get my step dad to ring up about it, since its someone he knows selling it.

Hopefully it'll be a 1.25 or at worst a 1.4... :)

So all is not lost, might be staying in the little club yet!

Its not the one you've linked to, but good choice nonetheless :) With the money saved buying it cheap you'll be able to fix it up easily :)

I'll hopefully get it for £200 and going to put £300 a side to get it fixed, which should be plenty :aviator:

As soon as I hear anything I'll post here! Step Dad tried to ring today but he didn't answer (at work I suspect) so going to ask him to try again tonight.
Don't want this car gone! If its a 1.4 or 1.25, I want it!!

Nick - The one I linked to was a 1.25 but I don't know how much chance their is that one will be a 1.25 or what, not sure whether the majority were 1.4?
Part of me hopes it is a 1.4 cos it will be quite a nippy little car, but I'd be equally happy with a 1.25 because insurance should be a bit kinder!

The 1.4 is rarer, so its more likely to be a 1.25. A new track rod end / wishbone /arch won't come to £300 :)

Will only be parts costs too no labour involved :) Shouldn't be a bad little car for less than £500. :aviator:

It's exactly like that. Ghia model with the wood effect plastic inside, leccy windows, central locking etc :)

Step Dad just spoke to the guy who has it, and has had it stuck on his drive for the last 4 months so wants it gone. It's his sons car. Apparently the damage was him swerving to hit a car, then a 4x4 hit him anyway! The panel isn't too badly damaged (but will be replaced if I get my mits on it) but the steering is a bit funny so probably needs tracking. They've had the steering rack and no luck so I think they've had enough of spending money on it, apparently the fella has a company car too so it wont be too missed.

Waiting for the guy to speak to his son about it then he's going to call my step dad back to let him know so hopefully I'll know soon if I'm getting it! Still not sure if its a 1.4 or 1.25 but from what Nick said I'm thinking more than likely a 1.25, especially if its someone's sons. Sounds 1.25'ish :oooh:

So excited, I want it, now :D

the 1.25 is a great engine anyway.
dont put it down, its very nippy for its size and itll be more than another to begin with, then you can drop a 1.7 puma in :P

good stuff, mk4 Golfs are boring. I had considered one in the past - even got as far as test driving a few.

Then I realised I'd be bored of it within a week.

Chris and Mikey - I'm not totally off the idea of a Golf to be honest, slowly the Golf thing is dying a bit but the thing thats so attractive is the low insurance. I wouldn't mind a Mk4 but I'd be fussy, it would have to be like this one! Hopefully its a 1.25 cos thats group 5 but the 1.4 wouldn't be a disaster as thats group 6 (same as my 1.3). The MK4 Golf is no good as a GTi, it lacks everything that made the Mk2 GTi what it was, apart from weighing a ton!!

Mada - Wasn't putting the 1.25 down at all mate, they're a good little engine and quite nippy as well, just a 1.4 would be nippier :P

Nick - Very cool stuff, if I get it. He said he was going to talk to his son and ring back so if he hasn't let my Step Dad towards the end of the week we'll ring him back!

Off-topic a bit, PAY DAY TOMORROW!! :D

If I can get this Fiesta though, I have the money waiting in cash. Plus £120 in my PayPal account to go towards some black Angel Eye's :aviator:
