MotorcyclesFish's Beginners' Guide to Oil & Filter Changing

written back in 2005, when he was fairly inhebriated. Worth reading! - Capri

Fairly simple operation once you know how, good on you for getting stuck in. You've got a good engine to start on with the HCS, it's quite simple and hopefully isn't covered in the poo a modern engine is.

Oil service I'm assuming to mean oil and filter change. In which case you need to jack the car up (I'd really recommend you get a mechanic-savvy friend to at least watch you do this or advise you, it's a simple operation but easy to get wrong if you're not used to it) and sit it on some axle stands at the front. Undo the sump plug (preferably when engine is still warm, as oil is more prone to draining quickly and fully then) and catch the oil in a container. You most likely will drop the sump plug and the washer that is on it into the old oil at this point: this is normal and swearing violently about this eventuality is part of working on a car. Once the oil's drained out you'll need to use a filter wrench or big fouquette set of pliers/grips to loosen the old oil filter off, again be careful that this doesn't dump oil all over the floor, catching the excess using your face is a suprisingly popular choice given how unpleasant it is. An alternative is to catch the oil in the container you used to drain the sump oil.

With all this done, wipe the machined surface you removed the oil filter from down using a bit of clean rag. Replace the sump plug using a new copper washer if you're being anal (I don't bother, but then I don't try and win shows etc.). Find your new oil filter and get it out the box. Open the new engine oil container and dip your finger in it. Put a light smearing of oil around the rubber bit of the oil filter on the mounting face using the oily finger. Then, whilst holding the oil filter in one hand like a baby that's just shat itself, clean your other hand. You won't be able to find the rag at this point as you're probably standing on it, so you will have to wipe it on your inadvisably-worn Gap jeans (£44.99, all GAP outlets). Screw the new oil filter on - it only has to be nipped up hand-tight; if you do it up using wrenches of any sort you like to suck 'conquering device' and I suggest you PM heeman10 for advice.

Go to top of engine. Fill engine to markers on dipstick with new oil. Turn engine on and run up until oil light goes out. Turn engine off, recheck oil level.

Procedure done, retire to a local pub for a gay poofy lager or maybe something manly like Abbot Ale for men.

Some advice: If any women are watching you work, double any swearing you might engage in. This will make them piss off and do some cookery or washing or whatever women like to do for fun and leaves you to work in peace. In all seriousness, never work under a motor alone; always get a mate to keep an eye on you, even if he's a screaming bender with not one fouquette clue about which end of a spanner is the business end (the answer is "both" in the case of a combi).

Tools:
13mm socket + ratchet for sump plug (may be 10mm on fiestas, check first)
Magnet-on-a-stick for fishing sump plug out of hot oil in drain pan.
Oil filter removal persuaders (filter wrench or big fouquette pliers)
Rag, lots of (if you're anything like me).

BTW apologies if this has been too patronising and you feel like kicking my face in; it's written as a newbie's guide to the first steps in a basic service. Any corrections can be addressed to Capri on the forum as I can't be fouquette editing this and alex actually has some sort of work ethic as regards to this forum.
